RoKC — Local services in North Kansas City

First the good:

tons of problems, both in the bouldering area and belay. There's a wide variety so anyone from beginners to professional freeclimbers can find routes that are challenging auto belays are nice for when you're climbing solo or with inexperienced climbers cheap as far as climbing gyms go (home gym is roughly 220 w/ tax for a 10-pack, rokc is around 160 after tax) abundant, there are 3 locations in different parts of the metro, all sharing the same pass/10-pack friends can use your 10-pack, which is nice if you want to treat someone

The ugly:

very few ways to safely downclimb when bouldering. There are entire walls with nothing but v4+ and zero downclimb holds, so you pretty much have to fall 10 feet onto the mat at the end. Most other gyms I've been to have a column of cup holds every 8-10 feet of climbing wall, which would be very welcome here

I only checked out NKC, but this location appeared to have very little if any renovation. It really looks like they dragged climbing walls into the warehouse the day they got the key to the place. Rafters are covered in rusty flaking paint chips, entire bathroom feels sticky. It's kind of a dive.

Overall, it's a solid gym whose few flaws could easily be fixed with some attention from the ownership. I'll continue to climb here whenever...

This place is awesome! I travel the country for work with my gear. I stop into climbing gyms when I have a chance. This gym is one of the cooler climb gyms I've found. The dude working the counter, (Dani I think), was super legit! They were really personable, and everyone hanging there was friendly and nice. The price was super fair, although for me traveling and just scoring a day pass, it does seem to jive for my pocket book a little better when there is a yoga class I can hit too. I managed to visit on on of the 2 days a week they don't have a class, but wasn't too harsh.

Even snagged a showed afterwards, (which I typically don't do but hey: Life on the road), and it was one of the cleanest and nicer gym showers I've seen.

They offer Alternative Bakery Cookie's, which are freakin Dank-tastic, and they have a pretty legit select of goodies and snacks.

The actual climbing areas are really incredible. There are a lot of audible lies and plenty of bouldering area. Even with a larger crowed there wasn't a lot of waiting.

Some of there routes seem to be credited for mutants or superhumans, but they are adequately marked.

I recommend this place on the real.

This has been my nearby home gym for a number of years.

They have auto belays, top rope, and lead, as well as bouldering.

If you are lucky and catch them in stock, the owners mom makes frozen peanut butter & banana graham cracker treats!

They have a wrap around tall wall in one good sized room with a small section in the middle. It has a small slab section, which also typically has some easier routes. They have a tall slightly back slanted area which is lead only. ... And a variance of things in between, mostly medium height, but some corners and such. They usually have a good variety of interesting problems set - which gradually rotate.

The front room, side from the front desk, includes a small conventional gym, then the bouldering area curves around a couple of times giving a pretty good variety. There are a couple of spots which are over hung.

They also have a yoga / community room. Everything is on the first floor.

The staff are friendly, the community is generally very friendly overall, granted there are tons of different people coming in.

Not the tallest walls or biggest facility in town, but it is a nice place and definitely worth while if you are looking for a nearby...
