Giant Eagle Supermarket — Local services in Oil City

For many years I avoided this store because it was generally very dirty, dimly lit and the staff was not very friendly or helpful. Yesterday, December 28, 2024, I was in Oil City when my wife texted me to pick up a few things before I came home. This store was on my route so I decided to give it a try for the first time in probably 15 years. The first thing I encountered was a cashier who bid me a “good morning”. That was a surprise. On my way to the bakery I met another employee who said “good morning”. Having employees who actually acknowledge you in a retail establishment is practically unheard of anymore. But two? I couldn’t believe it. I found this store to be a far cry from the dark, dingy cave it used to be. It was clean, bright and the shelves were fronted and faced. When I went to the checkout I was given a friendly greeting and asked if I had a Giant Eagle card. Given my past experiences I had thrown mine away years ago. A friendly man behind me offered to let me use his if it afforded me any savings. I declined because it did not. But I was impressed with his willingness and friendliness. I don’t know if perhaps this store has undergone a change in management or even upper management, but I was quite impressed with my shopping experience there. ITS A NICE STORE AND THEY HAVE MOST OF WHAT YOU NEWS,Ireason for 3 stars!!??THEY HAVE THESE ARROWS ON THE FLOOR TELLING WHICH WAY TO GO AND ITS A BUNCH OF BS,BECAUSE OF TURNING AT THE FIRST COUNTER TO GO TO THE FRONT COUNTER OR TO THE FREEZER NOW SINCE THIS COVID STUFF YOU NOW HAVE TO GO ALL THE WAY AROUND THE STORE FOR SOMETHING THAT USED TO TAKE A COUPLE MINUTES NOW TAKES YOU ATLEAST 10 AND DONT LET CERTAIN EMPLOYEES SEE YOU GO THRU THE FIRST LANE WHICH HAS ENOUGH ROOM FOR 2 CARTS TO PASS EACH OTHER BUT CERTAIN EMPLOYEES LIKE TO ACT LIKE A COP AN GRAB YOUR CART OR JUMP INFRONT OF YOU SO YOU CANT AN LET ME TELL YOU I CAME CLOSE TO CATCHING A CASE WHEN HE REACHED OVER THE COUNTER AN GRAB ME.JUST A REMINDER FOR THE WORKERS,ITS ONLY A CASHIERING JOB DONT OVER STEP YOUR BOUNDARIES AN TOUCH SOMEONE THINKING YOUR A COP OR A RENTA COP,SOME PEOPLE DONT LIKE BEING TOUCHED BY STRANGERS AN IT MIGHT HAVE A RESPONSE YOU WERE NOT EXPECTING SO JUST DO YOUR JOB AN CHECK PEOPLE OUT AN PACK...

Was just there and was unable to reach something on a top shelf. I asked a near by lady who works there if she could use her step she was using to get something off the shelf for me. She used a mean time and said no you can't use it. I proceeded to tell her I didn't want to use it, I just needed someone to help get something. She again with a mean tone said what do you want. I was trying to get water off the top shelf that I could not reach. I showed her where and she left the stool behind. When she realized she couldn't reach it either she sighed and grumbled. I at that point had enough and told her to nevermind, took my cart to customer service and told them I wouldn't be back again. Most of the staff is amazing there and even though it is more to shop there I always wanted to help locally and not just run to Wal Mart all the time. Well that lady sealed the deal Wal Mart...
