Wish I could give this two separate ratings one for the facility/teachers and a separate rating for the student stylist that cut my hair. I would give the student Sarah M. FIVE stars for the job she does. I have thick natural curly hair, so it can be a challenge to cut, The first time I went there Sarah seemed to have a natural instinct on how to cut my hair, Sarah's skill and some tips for her teacher and I will say it was by far one of the better haircuts I have had anywhere. The last time I was in she cut and color my hair. another good cut and she did a fast, neat and great job on the color.
Unfortunately teacher I had met on my first visit no longer worked there and my experience with the teachers this last visit in February that bumped my review down to three stars. In fact I would rate them 1 star. I had made a 7 p.m. appointment with Sarah, I got there about 6:45 the teacher at the desk was really giving me attitude saying that you have to be there before 7 to get a color done. I said well it is quarter too so what is the problem an she said well there is not enough time (they close at 9 ???)I I said well Sarah took the appointment and was told me getting here at 7 was not a problem. I said can she try and fit me . explaining I work pretty far and was not sure when I could arrange another evening sitter to come back. Her reply was "Well my other job is on the North Side and I have a two year old and I have to be here at 6". Finally she said I would have to pick on or the other that Sarah could not do both a cut and color (despite that being the monthly special) So I chose color, I sit in Sarah's chair, pick a color then the one teacher said "NO I AM NOT APPROVING IT, so you can't color her hair" Finally the other teacher approved it. In the end Sarah was able to cut, color and blow out my hair... I was done before 8:30 and clients that were with other students that had been there before me were still not done. I wish I could say that was the worst I witnessed, however the two teachers were so rude and uprofessional to both clients and students. All they cared was that they got to go home at 9 p.m. on the dot. Other students were coming up to Sarah ask questions and when she asked the teacher they said they were scared to because they did not want to get yelled at. By 8:15 the teachers were pushing all the girls to do their closing routines despite there being several customers, in fact the teacher INSISTED one student go and rinse the color off her clients (the girl was getting blonde foil highlights that had not been on for more than 15 minutes). The student, the client and another student told her color had not been on long enough and the teacher's response was you have to get her rinsed out so we can get out of there on time. The student listened and few minutes later came running over to ask Sarah and another student what to do because the clients hair was a bit orangey (because the color was not left on long enough). Because this teacher was rushing the students to do closing duties 30 minutes prior to close some poor girl ended up with orange hair. I understand this is school and things could go wrong. If it is an honest mistake by a student well that is okay but by negligence of a teacher that is unacceptable. If I was paying to send my child here I would be really upset the students spent more time asking each other stuff because the were afraid the teachers would yell at them. And also a big part of working in a salon is not just hair care, styling and cleaning it is customer service and the two teachers I witnessed that night...
Read moreRecent HP grad. Today I took my Esthetician exam and Aced it! I want to say that I started my journey with Donita and Lisa showing me the ropes. From day one they drilled in the importance of the idea that as adult learners you will get out of the program what you are willing to put into it. Their strong focus on certain aspects of the program that especially after today, I can say really helped me prepare for my exam to get my license. I listened and threw myself in taking the initiative that they both suggested and encouraged. To be successful in a career as an adult it takes both skill and initiative. I thrive in environments where I have room to grow at my pace and feeling respected as an adult learner to not need my hand held but in times when I did, I felt completely comfortable asking for what I needed and having the instructors step up to not just implement individual instruction but also incorporating lessons for the entire class to further compliment any individual instruction. In this I was also allowed room to grow into classroom leadership roles to teach back things I learned working with my classmates to further solidify my own knowledge. Some of the same teaching styles I am familiar with and became appreciative of in nursing school.
Not only did I take my exam and pass, but I aced it! Thank you to the instructors and support staff at HP especially Donita and Lisa and my all my former classmates and clients. Your instruction, support, services, and encouragement mean so much and the fantastic scores I received today is proof that Donita and Lisa were correct, you really do get what you put in!
Thanks also to Jayla and Crystal for all the administrative support. And Anna for tolerating my non stop suggestions as you were transitioning into your new position. Also, Lisa, I truly appreciate you always trying the lend a hand working in partnership with the esthetic students such as myself to show us the front desk and retail and lending us participants when we needed models and being so...
Read moreI came to HP once and had a so so experience..thought Iâd give it another try. Now, I know to never make that mistake again!
The students are on their own... they really donât have anyone over seeing their work, unless they actively SEARCH for an instructor.
Carly was the âinstructorâ but she did VERY LITTLE âinstructingâ and had an awful attitude when asked for assistance! I was really SHOCKED to witness this and felt so sorry for the studentsđŤ The instructor seemed to have a huge ego and was blatantly RUDE and disrespectful to the students and to me... the client!!!!!!
Completly unacceptable behavior!!
I should have walked out immediately!!! Maybe someone needs to explain her role to her?? Isnât she there to teach these young girls?? Iâve never found intimidation to be a worthy teaching method, but it seems this is Carlyâs method. Truly inexcusable to treat the students and clients in this manner!
My student was nice but clearly nervous and unsure of cutting hair!! Carly was nowhere to be found and it wasnât a busy day!!! Carly knew the student was struggling, but she didnât bother to âteachâ ... instead she left her alone!! HORRIBLE for the students!!! HORRIBLE for the client!!!
Other schools have instructors on the floor, actually âteachingâ and are assisting students! Other schools are less expensive and you will leave MUCH HAPPIER, guaranteed!!!!! If youâve never been to HP... youâre lucky. If youâre thinking of going... do yourself a favor and go elsewhere! There are plenty of schools in the area.. Cameo(Oak Lawn) Capri(Oak Forrest) or Mario Tricoci(Bridgeview) ... you will save yourself $$ and a whole lot of...
