My go-to joint for persimmons, mangoes, dragonfruit, miso, gochujang, sweet red bean paste ķ„ģ, mochi, soba, squid, bok Choi, and sweet Thai chili. Honestly, my ONLY joint for all things Asian. Ain't gettin' none of that anywhere else around here. Reminds me of the street markets in Korea. And there's a great noodle house in the back. I have something else for you... I fell in love with Korea when I was stationed there... the people, the music, the land. And the food. Sweet red bean paste was at the center of that whirlwind love affair that lasted only one year. Then my heart was broken. Let's learn about "sweet red bean paste." I would always say, "Dan Pat." Korean,Ā patĀ (ķ„,Ā Vigna angularis) contrasts withĀ kongĀ (콩, "bean"), rather than being considered a type of it.Ā KongĀ ("beans") without qualifiers usually means soybeans. AsĀ soĀ (ģ) means "filling", the wordĀ patsoĀ (ķ„ģ) means "patĀ filling", with unsweetened dark-red paste as its prototype.Ā DanĀ (ėØ, "sweet") attached toĀ patsoĀ makesĀ danpat-soĀ (ėØķ„ģ), the sweetened red bean paste, which is often calledĀ danpatĀ (ėØķ„; "sweetĀ pat").Ā GeopiĀ (ź±°ķ¼, "hulled, skinned, peeled, shelled, etc.") Attached toĀ patĀ makesĀ geopipatĀ (ź±°ķ¼ķ„), the dehulled red beans, and the white paste made ofĀ geopipatĀ is...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreIf you cook Asian food, this store is the only place you'll ever need to shop. Absolutely remarkable selection of ingredients for virtually any Asian dish you could possibly want to cook. It is, though, a bit daunting the first time you visit, partly because the aisles are narrow and the grocery items - dried foods, canned goods, sauces, etc. - are somewhat haphazardly shelved. Plus, for many of the items there is simply no price posted. You sort of have to guess what some stuff costs based on similar items shelved nearby. I suppose that's part of the fun of shopping there: exploring the store, discovering food items you've never heard of and have no idea what they're for, trying vegetables you've never seen before.... Warning: This place is addictive. Once you get familiar with its layout and feel more comfortable shopping there, you'll get to the cash register and be startled by the total.... and you'll get home and find out there were other items you forgot to buy, because you bought a bunch of stuff you'd never...
