Spruce Barbershop — Local services in Port Neches

WIll most likely not be using their services again.

I told the barber I was here for a haircut and beard trim, but I wasn’t sure what style or anything. The only things he mentioned was something about different clipper sizes. He didn’t ask anything else and got started. I was overall okay with the haircut even though he was having issues getting his scissors to work on my hair. He was a bit ruff with the comb in my hair and did not use any conditioner to make it easier to cut until more than halfway through. This caused a decent amount of pain. At one point he complained about it to another hair stylist and she came over and cut some of my hair to prove to him the scissors worked. I wish she had been the one working with me.

The rest of the haircut was alright until he started doing a taper around the base of my hairline. I couldn’t tell exactly what he was doing because I was not facing the mirror during most of the haircut. If I had known, I would have immediately told him to stop because I do not enjoy the taper looks at all. He made the strangest shape with it on the back of my head/neck When he showed the mirror reflection, I was too surprised to say anything and felt very embarrassed…

He then took the chair cloth off and put his tools away. It was clear he either forgot that I was also getting a beard trim, or didn’t want to do it and I that point I felt so awkward that I just wanted to leave. So I just paid for the haircut and left. It made me feel bad in retrospect because I got to sit there watching several other guys get the full beard treatment with towels and oils and everything. It felt like my barber did not really care how my hair turned out and wish he would have communicated with me more.

I feel like I would have had a better experience if one of the other barbers had been paired with me. They all seemed much more interested in their customers, and were asking them questions at different stages of their haircuts. I’ve been wanting to find a new barbershop to get my beard trimmed regularly, but I can not say that I would want to return after how awkward of an experience it was. I started going to Spruce when they first opened and it was just Brooke and Madison. I loved the atmosphere. Who wouldn't want a beer with a haircut. As they expanded and got bigger, the service got worse. I started seeing a barber consistently, and to my surprise, the next time I went in to see them, they were fired. No big deal, I'll see someone else. After bouncing between two or three barbers at that location, I finally found someone I liked that cut my hair well consistently. After seeing them multiple times, I go in to get my haircut, and wouldn't you know it, they have been fired as well. This was in the span of maybe 6 months. Something is shady with this place. They don't or can't maintain employees on a consistent basis. I've seen them come and go. I feel like the manager/owner might be difficult to work for or doesn't compensate her employees well. And that's purely from an outside point of view. I don't want to support a local business that probably doesn't treat their employees great. I'm seeing my 2nd fired barber now and they cut my hair great on a consistent basis. I've never had a bad haircut from them. Ever.

Do you want to support a local place that doesn't keep and most likely doesn't compensate their employees fairly, or do you want to go somewhere that the barber sees appropriate compensation and is treated fairly? I'd find somewhere else.

Best haircut in a 100 mile radius. Super refreshing atmosphere and the people are equally as great. I have a lot of respect for this business as well as the owner, Brooke Bellanger. Not only is the service great, but she also does a lot of work in the community. We’ve worked together on several projects to help out underprivileged kiddos as well as people in need of a helping hand. Brooke and Spruce Barbershop has always bent over backwards to care for local residents. In turn, Spruce has grown a considerable amount in a really short time and they’re doing an amazing job handling the huge influx of people wanting their haircuts handled by the best in the area. I hear word about an app coming out soon that will help clients gauge wait times. Sometimes, the best things truly are worth waiting for— and Spruce Barbershop is definitely one of those cases. I personally book appointments with Brooke and avoid the walk-in wait— if course, if I forget to book ahead of time, I have opportunity to sit back and enjoy a complimentary beverage. Check them out!
