My mom and I walked into Midtown Mod today with the intention of buying some decorative items for our kitchen. Unfortunately, as we were perusing the store, I noticed quite a few racist depictions of People of Color (POC) in the store's home décor selection. To be specific, they had the racist characters of "Black mammies" as black face salt and pepper shakers, statues of "hula girls" half naked and wearing grass skirts, and statues of Native American people also half dressed as warriors and "sexy Indians."
What started as a fun little excursion with my mom immediately became a shocking, and upon reflection, horrifying experience. Looking around I realized the store was subtly filled with these racially stereotypical, and harmful depictions POC communities. If you are a person who identifies as a Person of Color (as I do), or someone with an ounce of racial and/or ethnic sensitivity, I would highly recommend not going into this store. It is heartbreaking.
To the store owner, I would ask you to please deeply reconsider carrying these items in your store. You may not be aware of their horrible history and connection to our country's Jim Crow past, but it is worth doing a bit of research...
Read moreSuper cute vintage shop with tons of kitchen ware. I was shopping at this store on Saturday June 4, 2022. It was a rainy day. There was an older man in a wheelchair in the store as well. The woman working in the store made a comment that the man's wheelchair was tracking in mud and making a huge mess. I was shocked and appalled this woman would say such a thing to this man who is clearly in a wheelchair because he cannot walk. She was following him with a mop (how humiliating) and caused him to leave the store. I put back the items I was planning to purchase because this woman clearly doesn't understand that people with disabilities have rights and should not be shamed for their disability. Similarly I was wearing boots and I could've tracked in a ton of mud as well should I be called out for that? Horrible behavior by this store worker who I strongly believe is also the owner of the shop. I will never step foot in the store again. Think twice before you spend money...
