Where to begin? Where to begin? Okay. So I heard about We're The Wurst through Source Weekly, Bend Oregon's premiere lifestyle magazine. I read their review, with the tagline "Bites So Good, Your Neighbor Might Steal Some", and decided to try those proposed bites.
The problem was they were always closed! I understand the stress of running a foot cart, and of course, I was there at weird hours, such as after school (We're The Wurst is closed 2:30 to 4:30, before reopening). So when I finally came there with my dad, I ordered the brat and sat back to watch the magic. But, the thing was, I was the first customer of the day, and the stove was still heating up... The man working (I think he was the mystic Mathew Fiddler I read about, I'm not sure...) was kind enough to comp my meal, all eight dollars of it! Can you believe?
It was so kind, I tried to tip him. He refused. And the bratwurst only took twenty minutes! I was ravenous by the time the food came out, but not in a bad way. I had a Spoken Moto iced coffee (the delicious specialty known as the Castro, which is another review in the making) to sip on, so I was fine. Don't worry about me!
Anyways, when the food came out, twenty minutes later (which, by the way, was quicker than I thought it would be, considering Fiddler[?] was still stuffing sausage when I ordered), it blew my mind. Eight dollars for the largest brat in the world? OMG! It was huge! So big, it was inches out of the perfectly toasted potato bun! I tucked in to a meal of delicious mustard, crisp bread and tangy sauerkraut.
Not to mention the homemade, locally-sourced bratwurst! I had to try the wurst, since it is the namesake of the cart. It was mind-blowing.The casing was soft, and just chewy enough. It was served hot off the grill, with a juicy and perfectly seasoned inside. I loved every bite, and felt a deep regret when there was just a mustardy bun left.
Equal parts light and filling, the brat was a perfect lunch. But that's not all! Fiddler came out of the cart, in full chef regalia, with a gift card for a free next meal! Please, please, PLEASE go to We're The Wurst if you're lucky enough to stop by the pod at Spoken Moto.
They aren't always open, so check the hours to make sure the cart is open and ready to make your belly happy. I was there a little past eleven a.m, and while it says they opened at eleven, it took Fiddler a few minutes to get ready. So if you're on a tight schedule, maybe aim for a little later in the day. The man who served me was passionate about his food, kind and generous. I loved every bite of my brat, and look forward to my next trip! Pomme frites and crepes are in my future!
Thank you, Mathew Fiddler for a delicious meal. I'll be back, and I'll spread the word to whoever will listen, including by shouting at people on the street. Not really. Okay. Sorry, not sorry for the long review. I just had so much to say.
