I hope this review reaches the administrators at this school. A family member is going here to learn English as a second language and the first year was great.
This year with Mrs John, things are not as great. She's very discouraging at times. For example, she'll give homework but says "if you're going to do it wrong, just don't do it at all." As an educator, she should know that mistakes can be a learning experiences for both student and teacher.
Just recently, the adult students were doing an online assignment on Burlington and one of them asked, "Teacher can I ask you a question? Do you grade this?" Her response was, "I don't grade this. I just teach and if you want to learn, you'll learn." Some of the students looked at each other in disbelief because they felt her tone of voice was uncalled for. It was sad to see the student who had just asked the question, put his head down.
The first time she shared with the students about a computer class available in the mornings, she asked who would like to sign up and when no one raised their hand she said, "Oh, so no one wants to learn?" Comments like that are not necessary because the majority of the students are there to learn English to have better opportunities and try to advance both in their personal lives and in their careers. People work during the day and if no one raised their hand, each have their reasons.
There's many other incidents but overall it makes me sad how discouraging she can be. She comes off as arrogant sometimes and rude.
Teachers can make a HUGE impact in their communities and in people's lives. A teacher should always strive to be kind, compassionate, patient, and most importantly motivating!
I'm not sure how she carries herself with her other classes or if she's only like this with this bilingual class. I understand this class is towards the end of the day and she could be tired but that's no excuse to crush people's hopes of learning. My family member wanted to quit the first few classes. I encouraged him to keep trying and even if he failed the class, at least he tried and some learning is better than none.
My apologies for such lengthy review. Thank you for taking the time...
