The Knittin’ Coop in Salem, VA, is an absolute gem for any yarn enthusiast! I first discovered this delightful shop during a yarn shop hop in 2022 while exploring the area's local fiber arts treasures. Ever since, whenever I’m in Salem or visiting the VA hospital, I make it a point to stop by and see what new treasures have “hatched.”
What sets the Knittin’ Coop apart is the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. They are genuinely helpful, and what amazes me most is their ability to remember projects I’ve worked on and little personal details—it’s such a thoughtful touch that makes every visit feel special.
The shop itself is cozy, evoking an old-world charm that feels like a warm hug as soon as you step inside. It’s not just a place to shop—it’s a community hub. They coordinate unique activities like wilderness retreats and even days at the ballpark, offering opportunities to connect with fellow fiber enthusiasts. You can also bring your projects and sit and stitch in the shop, which makes it even more welcoming.
I particularly love their selection of roving yarn, perfect for my thrum knitting projects. Even though I live in Lynchburg, I’m always happy to make the trip to Salem to visit one of my absolute favorite yarn shops. If you’re a knitter, crocheter, or fiber artist of any kind, don’t miss the chance to experience the Knittin’ Coop—you...
Read moreMy wife is the knitter in the family therefore my visits to the Knittin’ Coop are typically for birthday, Christmas, Mother’s Day presents etc. Sometimes I get to tag along “just for fun”. That being said I have gotten to know Robin the owner and even when I come in with the most inane, uninformed and ridiculous questions she has always taken time to answer them, talk about ideas for my wife and make me feel welcomed and valued as a customer. I’ve learned enough from my wife’s many years of knitting and asking questions while shopping for her to know that The Knittin’ Coop has an excellent selection of high quality products and is a valuable source of advice and inspiration for knitters of many skill levels as evidenced by the fact that there are regularly people in the store working on projects, both seeking guidance and sharing experiences. Small businesses owned and run by knowledgeable and passionate owners who are selling high quality and in many instances locally produced products are getting harder and harder to find which makes me more than happy to patronize the...
Read moreI love the knittin' coop! The owner, Robin, has an amazing selection of hand dyed, natural fiber yarns and lots of supplies for any fiber art. She frequently showcases and supports local artists selling their handmade supplies for your projects.
Robin creates a welcoming atmosphere for any type of fiber artist. Frequently, you'll find artists working at the back table on their latest crochet, knit, or embroidery project. If you need help reading a pattern or figuring out a new stitch, Robin or one of the other artists hanging out will help you figure it out.
She also puts out a monthly calendar with events going on throughout the month, such as twice weekly knitting (and other fiber art) circles, trips, live music, and more! Robin and the knittin' coop are a feature of...
