This review is based purely off my several visits for my bearded dragon. It looks like everyone else in the reviews bringing in their birds, bunnies, etc. have had great experiences which is great. However, if you dig through every single review on here like I did, you will find some very unsettling experiences people have had bringing in their reptiles or rodents. I’ve had to bring my beardie in a few times over the past few years and I’ve seen both Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Gillet who are the only ones that specialize in reptiles. They both were unable to speak to what the growing mass on my beardie was. They did not offer any kind of explanation or detail to help me understand what their evaluation is (for two separate health issues). I felt like both vets (more so Dr. Jenkins) handled my beardie a bit rough but that’s barely any of my concerns. My biggest concern is why they not only provided little to no assessment on his health and the growing mass, why a fine needle aspirate was never offered when that’s what every single other vet I have consulted has mentioned as the first common, non-invasive and low-cost solution. Why is the ONLY solution they are telling me is to surgically remove the mass and send to a lab for an answer? Why is the surgery quoted at $2600 and then jumps to $3500 a year later and then a couple months later it is even more than that but I need to bring him in for a third time exam to get an even higher quote and still get the same answer which is that they don’t know. Thanks to another reviewer on here (who had a horrendous experience with Dr. Jenkins), I took my beardie to Amazon Animal Hospital in Chula Vista. They gave me a free first exam. Offered a $30 fine needle aspirate test, $600 to do the exact same surgery that Avian is saying and sat with me for a long time explaining and educating me on their assessment on my bearded dragon and told me there is no expiration on the quoted surgery. I am not saying Avian & Exotic misdiagnosed or incorrectly informed me… it is the fact that they did not inform me whatsoever and pressured me into doing an unnecessary overpriced surgery with zero explanation or regards to why I should do it. All these separate uncomfortable experiences followed by one amazing experience with another vet made me feel so violated that I as deeply loving pet owner even considered shelling out thousands of dollars to put my bearded dragon under a risky surgery in the hands of some shifty vets. I’m sad to write this review because I do believe this place has great vets but as a reptile owner, I am highly recommending you do not go here.

I tried to post a full 3 page review of my experience with this location, but I had to keep under 5k characters. I feel swindled. Bamboozled. Played like a banjo. My rat boy , approx. 2- 2.5yrs old unfortunately grew a tumor from the left side of his mammary. ABC Vet referred me Avian due to their specialty in rodents. Dr. Jeffrey Jenkins seen my boy, said surgery is $550(he didn't recommend, due to his age. I'll give him that) OR can shave his body, give him a $70 cream to put on daily which has sulfur & silver that aids in wound healing. This doctor had a great upbeat personality, kinda funny but a little too sarcastic for a medical setting. Decides NOT give my pet the full medical care for a good healing, by claiming they ran out of ecollars, KNOWING he will chew his open wound on his mammary tumor. He even said "the cream won't bother his little belly". Offered me a personal visual with DIY bullet points on how to make a cloth ecollar, that he didn't want to give or sell since, it was their "Last one." He didn't feel his tech who ONLY makes $35 an hour should be put to "peasant" work & suggests I make it myself after paying $130. Nine days later, his wound is worse than what it was 9 days ago. I called to ask for an ecollar, that should of been given at the appointment. I offered to pay for it multiple times & was shot down by Shelly who said I need to pay $63 for him to reexamined, they will not give an ecollar due to medical negligence, even though one should of been given at the appointment to avoid my rat chewing and biting on his wound even more but that wasn't done. Which is actual medical negligence. Shelly went back & fourth with me & my mom. Shelly was rude, condescending, lacks empathy & compassion. Bailey called with her cute little attitude, saying the bill would be $213. In the next call, Bailey broke down the fees a little more with a lot more attitude, Bailey didn't talk over, nor talk down, I'll give her that. Resolution: None. They made it very clear the only way I was going to get that ecollar, from them, was to spend another couple hundred dollars. But its okay, we all get our karma back some way. Thank God for Amazon Market Place and Prime shipping. I found cute little collars for rodents for less than $10 . I'll post an update picture when it comes, so anyone else they try to swindle and bamboozle for more money can save their energy and stress. I will not recommend this place. I will not come back. Hopefully your experience will be much better than mines was and I truly mean that.

This review is probably the most important I have posted to google, I decided to write it up on my laptop because the work this vet clinic does can be a matter of life and death. My 2 year old Holland Lop is named Buddy. He is litter box trained and lives inside the house. Buddy is usually very outgoing and social, about a week ago I noticed his energy was off and quickly got worse. Sometimes with bunnies they can be temperamental depending on time of year, time of day, etc. Initially I was not worried until he did not eat his dinner. That was a red flag for me but because that has happened a few times in his life, I did not panic. Over the course of the next few evening hours, Buddy lacked normal behavior and he started having trouble keeping his head up or showing his normal alertness. By the time I felt I needed to get Buddy medical treatment, all the local exotic vets were closed and I could not afford the 600.00 bucks for the an emergency visits to one of the big box pet hospitals. I stayed up with Buddy all night, monitoring him and just encourage him to keep fighting. My bunny groomer had previously praised Avian so I put Buddy in his travel crate and took him there 30 minutes before they opened. This was on a Thursday. The clinic was already staffed and they immediately checked Buddy in. I cant say enough about how much I appreciated that Avian made Buddy a priority and the vet diagnosed him before they opened to their normal scheduled appointments. The vet believed Buddy has a life threatening infection and he was immediately placed on medications and I was to continue the treatments at home for the next week. Within a few hours of leaving Avian Buddy started showing signs of life but I had to force feed and drink Buddy for the next 5 days. It is very dangerous for bunnies to stop eating and drinking water, their bodies require constant nourishment. The vet did an awesome job explaining everything. I have just found my new favorite spot to take my bunny. The attention was fast and the price was a third of what the hospital wanted just to check him in. Thank you Avian for saving Buddy!

this review is posted as a response to Dr Gillet’s reply to our initial review:

“prolonged neglect” is a very wild and inaccurate statement to make. you don’t know anything about me or my care for waffles during his life with us. we took him to the vet for his annual checkup because we loved and cared about him. during the time between his first visit with you and his emergency visit on the 10th we tried 17 days worth of medication because we loved and cared about him. a follow up visit was absolutely in our plans.

during that month we tried 4 different types of hay (wafer cut, second cut, all natural and all natural hay with carrots mixed in), hay sticks, hay cubes, and literally anything we could try to get him to eat hay while we did his meds. but you know what else? those are things we did for him throughout his whole life which you never cared to ask. when i showed up with waffles you didn’t ask me a single question on his care and the things we tried to do in between his first visit and his death. no attempt was made to inquire for information about his care, so it’s really unprofessional for you to say he was neglected. i can post receipts of everything i’ve ever bought for him, his cage setup, my amazon wishlist for him, his daily feeding schedule and the things he was fed, etc. WE NEVER NEGLECTED HIM. we brought a separate guinea pig in with waffles for his annual checkup and you said absolutely nothing about him and his care so “prolonged neglect” is a lie. wouldn’t our other piggie be “neglected” if they lived together?

that is an extremely crazy and harmful take considering when we took waffles and our other guinea pig for their ANNUAL visit nothing was ever said about improper care. you said cinnamon was healthy and we made a health plan to get waffles back on track. you’re acting as though we took waffles in a month ago already knowing he was sick which isn’t the case. we took him for an annual checkup, we expressed some concerns that we were unsure if they were actual concerns and were given a HUGE list of potential things we could try and what the issue may be. mind you, it was never expressed to us that there was any MAJOR issues going on, especially dental related health. we left that appointment with you optimistic about his care plan.

the morning of his passing we called hours before things got bad stating our concern for his health. we were told to bring him on the following day at 8am and that you believed he would be okay until then. i’m not saying this to place blame on you but to emphasis that we loved him and never wanted this to happen this way.

the main purpose of our initial review was to comment on your bedside manner, not your veterinary skills. your response is very telling of how you took this criticism. you decided to take our critique and reply with something very disappointing. we have had good veterinary experience with our other pets with you, but we cannot overlook your bedside manner, which has only been highlighted in your response. no other pet parent should have to go through the emotional toll of losing a pet and then receive cold attitude from the vet. we loved waffles with all of our hearts and we are grieving his loss. your response is very telling of our one and only complaint- your bedside manner. i hope for future pet parents that you’re much kinder to them than...

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE!! I took my pet snake to be seen here in August because he was regurgitating his food, and the vet I got (a female) was very friendly and did a physical exam of my ball python. She determined he had an upper respiratory infection and he received a liquid feed and I was sent home with injections to give him every 3 days for a month. In September once his injections were done, I fed him and he did fine. October comes and he ate fine again, then he started the process of shedding. In November, he still had not finished shedding and I noticed he looked like he was losing weight. I took him in to be seen again to this vet on November 11th, and Dr. Jenkins was the one who took the appointment. He didn't do any sort of physical exam whatsoever, he just picked him up briefly and then set him back down telling me the issue was the snakes husbandry, and that I needed to keep it more humid and warmer in his terrarium. I was already doing this because of the long shed he had so I was surprised this is what Dr. Jenkins thought. The entire appointment was basically taken up by the vet talking about himself, telling us how he had so much experience with snakes and the type he had at home, instead of focusing on my pet snake or doing an actual exam on him.

I left and went to buy more items from a pet store to put in my terrarium to make sure the humidity and heat were even more controlled. When I got home I noticed my snake was bleeding from a lifted scale on his body that directly exposed his flesh instead of new shed. I called the vets office to try to get some advice since I had literally just left their office an hour before. The office was closed and I left a voicemail urging them to call me back the following day. They never called me back. The care he received there was such a difference, they actually examined him and injected him with some fluids and meds, and they gave me an ointment to apply to his open wound. Since this was an emergency vet, they told me to do a follow up appointment with a regular vet the following day and they gave me a list of options since I told them I was not happy with the service we received at Avian & Exotics with Dr. Jenkins. 2 of the vet techs shared their similar negative experiences they had with him as well, when they took their own exotic animals to him.

The next day I made an appointment at a different vet in La Mesa for a follow up, but unfortunately before we made it to the appointment my pet snake passed away. The vet at the new place in La Mesa told me that if my snake would have gotten blood work done, it could have been determined what kind of infection he had and perhaps it could have been treated in time. It's extremely upsetting and frustrating that my pet passed away in just a weeks time from being seen by Dr. Jenkins, and no type of tests were administered or even an actual physical exam during his appointment, where he could have also seen the wound that I saw when we got home. Of course there's no way of knowing if the true infection could have been treated in time, but I definitely know that the lack of care and negligence that occurred played a direct role in the last days that my...
