I had two redwood burl pieces that my husband and I acquired on our honeymoon almost 4 decades before in Northern California. One was a redwood burl slab we acquired at a roadside vendor with "birdseye" grain. The other was a massive chunk of redwood burl driftwood we unearthed on the beach with only a small end of it initially visible in the sand. We dug and dug and wrapped a rope around it to drag it closer to our truck. Both pieces sat for years being moved in and out of our garage and around the driveway while we were then busy working and having our 2 kids. Sadly, the next delay was the result of a 17-year battle against a rare paralyzing disease that struck my sweet husband enveloping our lives. This fall, five years after my husband's passing, I discovered Don and his team at Old Fashioned Lumber. Don listened to my story and I knew he understood how important these rough pieces meant to my heart and soul. I was looking for a custom made desk that was different than anything you can buy at a normal store. I searched for custom made wood work and found Old Fashion. Meet with owner Don and walked me through the process of picking out a unique piece of lumber and showing me the vision he could make a beautiful one of a kind desk. I then met Zakhar who took the reins and we picked out what my vision was and his expertise in how to accomplish. Zakhar kept me informed all though the process. If I had questions , he responded back immediately. Once he was done with the masterpiece , he delivered it himself and set it up to make sure I was happy. I could not have had a better experience. The desk was so beautiful that it makes another wood piece of furniture I have look outdated so I’m on my second piece of work with Zakhar.
