I applied to NCF back in the Fall of 1992, for admission starting in the 1993/1994 Academic Year. I got in, and being from the Northeast, I was attracted to the climate in Florida, and did think it would be interesting to go back and forth between the drastically different environments. Even though I ultimately chose to go to college up in New England, I did think NCF was a good "fit" for me.
I attended Hampshire College in Amherst, MA -- which is VERY similar to NCF academically and socially. However, I wanted to found and coach Hampshire's first Alpine ⛷️ Team, and at NCF, that just would NOT have been possible. I did ❤️ the NCF campus, and I thought NCF had a great college community as well, although it didn't: "tick all the boxes" for me like Hampshire did.
I also am NOT in support of what has been happening at NCF with Ron Desantis' recent actions of adding more conservative trustees to NCF's Board. It's NOT in line with what NCF stands for, and I'm just not convinced that it will lead to anything positive for the college, nor it's student body or faculty which has ALWAYS attracted liberal and progressive Students & Professors who believe in free, critical progressive thought.
I am grateful that my Alma Mater has extended a cooperative transfer agreement to NCF students if they wish to transfer colleges. EVERY college student has the right to pursue and construct their own education, free of intolerance and prejudice, coercion or pressure from...
Read moreWe went on a college tour of New College of Florida. New College is a unique honors college that is part of the State University System of Florida.
The tour was very informing about how New College focuses on academics, the arts, and a liberal arts college education. While New College is small, it has growth plans in place. The tour guide advised they have hired 15 new multidiscipline faculty members, with a goal to grow the college from about 800 to 1,200 students.
Unique Observations:
New College is located on Sarasota Bay, which makes for a beautiful and relaxing place to attend college, have special events, and participate in water sports.
New College campus is split between the north and south side by Tamiami Trail, with a pedestrian walkover for students.
New College is located very close to the Sarasota- Bradenton International Airport, which makes it very convenient to travel to and from the campus.
Located in beautiful Sarasota, Florida, New College is closely connected with the local art, cultural, and outdoor recreation scene.
For a true liberal arts education, you should consider New...
Read moreWas once the true-and-blue hidden gem of Sarasota. Everything was just beauteous; sadly, emphasis on "was". Albeit underfunded/largely underappreciated by DeSantis and his cronies in its prime, it was an exceedingly kind and comfortable space that stood out from the rest by nurturing critical thought, fostering safe spaces, and daring to think beyond the box to pave a future for everybody that had a dream. At New College, I had a future. I had scholarships. Now it stands a complete and utter shell of its former self; even the bloody logo has been decimated into a disgustingly conservative and cold parody of itself. New College of Florida used to have my heart...Richard Corcoran ruined absolutely everything. I have helplessly witnessed the burning of the Library of Alexandria, and it started in Sarasota. It was never perfect, but it...
