Scarborough Ace Hardware — Local services in Scotts Valley

The slogan "Ace is the place with the helpful hardware man" is entirely true at this store. Walk in the door and say what you need to the first staffer, and they'll take you right to the desired product. Nicest, most helpful people I've ever seen in a store. Large range of products means it's a convenient one stop. However, there's a negative. Any Ace brand product may likely be substandard or mediocre. Examples include the trimmer line in the photo. I never realized how awful the Ace product was until I bought a competitor. Ace is 1 star; Titanium gets 5. They used to sell Ace branded driveway sealer, but as you see in the second photo, it was awful, I asked for and got a full refund and then redid the driveway. What a pain. Now they understandably only sell name branded product. I bought some little Ace-branded Delta faucet washers, and two of them were the wrong size. Etc., etc. Note that all prices are maximum full retail except for sale items. So you pay for the great convenience. A sink drinking water faucet that's $16 on Amazon is $25 at this store. Etc. You'll have to decide if the difference is worth it. I go there a few times a year for small stuff like screws and stainless steel clamps but otherwise go elsewhere. I went in today after having two poor experiences finding a common tool in two other chain hardware stores. Scarborough ACE could not be a more different experience.

When you go in, you will immediately notice a clean, well stocked store with a friendly staff and happy customers. The aisles are well-marked; I was able to find the correct item within thirty seconds. The tool I needed was locked down, as I expected, so I asked a staff person to unlock it for me. They responded immediately and offered to hand it over or leave it at checkout- my preference. I was rung up by another friendly, efficient staff member. I was asked if I had a rewards card but not battered about it. The price was dead on what I hoped for, with higher and lower priced versions in other sizes also available.

When I left I noticed a sale outside- fill up a bag with overstock or recycled items from the bins for $10. There was great stuff with a lot of variety in there, and I ended up hitting up the deal as well with project assistance from more knowledgeable, never pushy or arrogant staff.

What a store! Long live this...

A big fat meh to all the ACE hardware stores.. Nothing but excuses when it comes to public bathrooms. I bet it comes up during staff meetings.. Tell the customer this if pressed about the bathrooms. It's the fault of one man's actions, a customer, he ruined it for everybody.. the plumbings down. Ditto for the one of off Scotts Valley Blvd on Pueblo de whatever. You guys are a big company open to the public with no public restroom? Shame on you... and shame on you for pushing your clientele off on Eric's deli and Nob Hill foods, telling your customers to use their bathrooms.. Put your big boy pants on ACE and open your potty to the public... I won't shop here ever again, just like I refuse to buy gas at gas stations with no public bathrooms... NOPE.

Boycot these guys until they pony up some public bathrooms.

And go ahead and blame it on...
