I stopped by today with my dad's college class ring. I had some concerns about the security of the stone, and questions regarding the possibility of resizing the ring for my finger.

They were very friendly and helpful. They cleaned the ring to get a better look at it. I was given an honest opinion regarding both of the reasons I brought it in.

The setting of the stone goes through a hole in the middle and is flared on the back side, much like a rivet. They told me it may not be a good idea to try to tighten it by flaring it further, as it might weaken it and increase the chances of losing the stone, rather than making it more secure. (I'm adding a couple pictures to better show what I'm describing)

As for resizing, they measured the ring, and my finger and the consensus was that it would be too much of a size increase to just roll the band thinner. Dad wore the ring every day since 1965, and it had already thinned some just from natural wear. To cut the ring and weld in additional metal may also weaken the ring, given its age and condition.

I asked what I owed for the cleaning and was told there was no charge.

In the end, I agreed with their assessment and decided to just leave the ring as is. I greatly appreciate their forthright honest opinion.
