As a one-time competitive speed skater I was really looking forward to this visit and had scheduled time in our stay to skate. I have skated here twice before and thoroughly enjoyed it, but this time I was extremely disappointed.
First, my 2 Grandsons rented skates. The skates themselves looked to be in great condition compared to rentals at many other places, but they were extremely blunt. Probably not surprising since there is only one strip of rubber matting from the side door to the ice. Pretty sure there was more in previous years. I saw several kids walking on concrete with rented skates on, Guaranteed to take any semblance of an edge off. For $15 each for the rental alone this is unacceptable and unforgiveable.
On to the ice itself. I have skated on some bad ice in the past, but this was by far the worst. I bring my own skates because I love to skate, but the ice was so bad I did not stay on it long. There were holes in it which almost took me down a few times. I found a rock sticking up through the ice, which management put a cone over. There were giant grooves in the ice which blades would get stuck in causing loss of control. These also made me fear for my blades, speed skate blades being very thin. There were also many patches of snow although it had not snowed for several days prior to our visit.
I do understand this was early in the season and the Zamboni driver did tell me they had only been able to get on the ice 2 days prior. However, this was $20 a person for 2 hours, not including the $15/pair skate rental - $90 for me and my 2 Grandsons with 2 skate rentals. For that price I expect a premium experience. I would have been far less disappointed had the place been closed until it was properly prepared. Even a reduced price due to conditions would have been acceptable. At the very least a warning about sub-par conditions before we paid would...
Read moreIce was a bit choppy, but maybe we just came at a bad time. The only thing that was sub-par, was the skate process inside. We got there at 7pm in January, so of course it was nearing below-0°. The building has a bit of a waiting room, then an incline to the next room where we try on skates and checkout, so the waiting room itself was completely empty. The businesses had people waiting in a line outside as a precaution. Why they couldn't just have people wait in the waiting room, in a line or distanced, instead of bundled together in 4° windy weather, is beyond me. The employees were very nice, a bit slow with everything but helpful. Can't wait to go again, hopefully in warmer...
Read moreCall before you spend the money to see if ice is cleaned. Just cause it’s open doesn’t mean it’s skate-able. An hour in and the ice still had an inch of snow. Asked for a shovel and they wouldn’t give it to us. We were offering to clean our own ice! They say, “Zamboni is on its way”… 20 min later still shoveling our own ice using kid skate helpers. If you are going to charge a butt load of money attest clean your ice or let us do it. Waste of money.
*updated: they did discount us since the ice never got cleaned. Still recommend calling! Their hours online aren’t...
