This NDM is a local chain of international food grocery stores located in and around Atlanta with about 7 stores. This branch just opened in the old Publix space. There is another NDM located on Spring Road, Smyrna. It pretty much still resembles a Publix on the outside and most of the inside. The Deli and Bakery counters are still where they used to be. And veggies are still located to the left as you enter from the parking lot.
One thing that continues to hold true to every NDM location I have visited is the aisles are cluttered with all sorts of pallets and items making it difficult at times to get around. Maybe some of that is due to stil setting up the new store?
What cannot be beat is the selection of products from around the world! And the meat and seafood and vegetables are some of the cheapest and best around. Cilantro cost about 1/3 of what it costs at Kroger/Publix/Walmart. All kinds of cuts of meat at far cheaper prices as well.
My 1 complaint is the powerful fish aroma that hits you when you walk in. Mind you I am no novice to docks, piers, and fish markets, but it should not smell that way in a brand new store IMHO. And I do not smell it when going to any other fish vendor here or in Florida.
Smell or not, I bought head on shrimp and took them home cleaned and cooked them shell on, 3 to 4 minutes, in a gentle simmer until just turning pink and tails just starting to curl. Upon trying to peel the tails they just disentegrated and fell apart. Some smelled bad and most of the meat was not salvageable. The meat was grainy and had pulled completely away from the shells.
Having cooked shrimp of all types (Tiger, Pink, key west, etc.) it is my opinion that these were not as fresh as they needed to be.. hence the smell, graininess, disintegration and pulling away from the shell.
Out of about 18 shrimp only 4 were edible. I was able to reclaim a few bits and pieces from others but dinner was ruined. I have bought plenty of food from NDM over the years and this is the 1st time this has happened.
I will still go but next time but I will inspect and smell the seafood before buying.
Still think they have a great selection of veggies and meat and unique products. Glad they are closer to me and I plan...
Read moreI have been going to Nam Dae Mun for three years now. Before, the one on South Cobb opened, I went to the one on Spring Rd. After many many misses with the chicken on Spring Rd. not being fresh, going bad after ONE DAY, I stopped buying their chicken and any other meat for that matter there. For a time the Nam Dae Mun on South Cobb Drive was "okay" with their meat department but then I noticed the same thing- their chicken goes bad so quickly that it's not worth it. Even with chicken purchased that day and cooked/consumed, it made my family sick. Every. Single. Time. This doesn't happen with other meat bought elsewhere. Their coolers are not adequate. When looking around their freezer section with meats, I've seen dead insects, mostly flies with the frozen lamb. The frozen meats are almost always this dark, not quite right color and sometimes half frozen. As for their produce, most of it is cheap, which is fine under a budget but hardly ever is the produce fresh. I've had to throw out more food bought from here than I have consumed. I would not recommend buying anything other than the Ethnic foods that are prepacked/canned since there is a good variety that most other grocery stores do not carry.
TL;DR - Buy produce with caution. DO NOT BUY MEAT. Good place for hard to find ethnic foods/spices. I wouldn't recommend going here for...
Read moreI am Disappointed. We do our best to support local markets and then these same stores scam the same people who help support them. Recently purchased an and alcoholic item whoms price range from $13-$18 in near by stores. But yet Nam Dea Mun charged $32 PER case(I purchased 2 cases of jarritos cantaritos) Which I miss took as $32 for both cases when cashing out, until a closer inspection of the receipt as I was already driving, did I notice it was $32 per case coming to $64 for an item that is sold for $13 at Walmart. When I called to ask if the price was correct the person on the line confirmed that $32 per case was correct. In disbelief I called once more to ask about returning the item as that was a ridiculous price to charge. But due to GA liquor return laws we wouldn't be able to return it. This was truly a mistake learned from my side. I will not be stepping into any Nam Dea Mun stores and will be encouraging family and friends to stay away. They do offer a large variety of items and produce some priced a bit more then nearby stores but the price gouge of $32 on a $13 item was mostly definitely a sign of what they might be pricing other items and scaming their...
