Review for GameStop â Somerdale NJ Location

My son and I recently visited the Somerdale GameStop to purchase one of the latest Super Mario games as a birthday gift. This was my very first visit to a GameStop store. I usually purchase our games from Walmart but since Walmart does not accept Apple Pay and my son had an e-gift card, we decided to try GameStop for the first time. What should have been a joyful and rewarding experience turned into a disappointing one due to a significant issue with the storeâs definition of what qualifies as a ânewâ product.
A bit of background. My son, who just turned 10 on July 22nd, has been saving his quarters, birthday gift cards, and cash since January. In our household, earning rewards through effort, savings, and academic achievement is part of the value system. This game was something he truly earned and anticipated.
The store environment was initially warm and welcoming. I want to commend Mehki (spelled M E H K I) for his professionalism and product knowledge. He was helpful and engaging and on his own he scored 5 Stars as a great employee. However, my issue is rooted in GameStopâs policy of selling gutted unsealed display games at full new game prices.
After completing the transaction, I learned that the game had been removed from its original Nintendo packaging for display purposes, a practice referred to as âgutting.â For me, this completely diminished the new game experience. The joy of tearing open a sealed game, a core part of a personal earned reward, was stripped away.
A product that has been opened handled and displayed should not be sold at full price under the guise of being new. I strongly urge GameStopâs corporate leadership to revisit this practice and to ensure front-line staff are aligned with customer expectations. A ânewâ product should be sealed untampered with and handed to the customer in its original packaging. If only one item remains and it has been displayed customers should be offered a discount or the choice to purchase a truly sealed item from another location.
Additionally during the visit several individuals began sharing their own experiences at the counter while I was still being served. While this may have been well-intentioned it diluted the quality of service and made me feel unheard as a paying customer. Personalized service and undivided attention matter especially when making a special purchase.
This experience left me deeply disappointed. It was a moment that should have been joyful memorable and celebratory. Instead it felt transactional dismissive and incomplete. I called into customer service (after talking to a friendly and helpful employee from the store), and nothing was really resolved. Well so I thought. Iâm not sure how the manager at this location found out I didnât get my problem fixed, and when I called back they said they would work with me, they helped me with my issue, and now I have my console. Honestly I was ready to cancel my order and never return to any GameStop again..but if corporate reads these at all..youâre Somerdale GameStop employees are tops blooby!! They honestly made my entire day if not my whole week honestly. This is now my GameStop of choice Iâll return just for the staff...

I had an issue with more or less all of the associates their not notifying me on my pre-order was in and causing my order to be sold by online means. This was after me waiting over a month for it.
I called everyday and every time I called they kept saying the order was in Transit, which was a lie. I made a complaint to GameStop online and the district manager continues to ignore my complaint as per the support team.
This causes this location to be a place of poor business practices and unhealthy customer service. Which is a shame because this was a very friendly and welcoming place until recently.
