One of my students families gave me a gift card to this store for Christmas last year. I went in to use it and the owner of the store told me it’s part of her old system and she will not be able to allow me to use it. I asked her what she did for everyone else who had a gift card and she said, “I just can’t honor them”. This is unacceptable from a business to profit off of people buying gift cards and not honor them. She said, “the best I can do is 10 dollars off your purchase”. I wouldn’t buy any gift cards from this person. Just pure profit… I’m not sure that’s even legal. There is no excuse for this. It doesn’t matter if the system changes, you sold gift cards under whatever was used. We asked if she kept records of her sales for the cards and her response was “no, sorry”. Unacceptable. Very poor business.
Ohio gift card act of 2006. ORC 1349.61 “Makes it illegal for most gift cards to expire in less than two years from their issue date. States that gift cards with no expiration dates are valid until redeemed or replaced.” (Ohio Attorney General Website)
Update to the owners response: The business has an image of the same gift card I tried to use posted on their website but says there’s no way to honor it. It doesn’t matter what the excuse is. This is a terrible way to...
