Big Cat Country is located in the south eastern part of the St. Louis Zoo in the Red Rocks area. Back when the exhibit was constructed in 1975 it was state of the art and won awards but it may seem a little dated when compared to the cheetah enclosure in The River's Edge. It's still pretty wild how close you can get to the snow leopard, serval, and puma in Big Cat Country. You'll have to bring a camera with manual focus in order to make it appear as if there isn't a big wiry cage blocking your shot and a zoom lens to get the jaguar, lions, and tiger since they are much farther away.

This is one of the older sections of the zoo, and you have to walk uphill to get here, but it is well worth it. As you might expect from the name, this area houses the large felines -- lions, leopards, tigers, and jaguars. You sometimes have to be a bit of a sleuth to spot them in their habitats, but that's part of the fun. Unfortunately some of the walls are a big high, so you may have to take your kids out of their strollers if they want to see the animals.

Fun place to see the big cats. Unfortunately it was super hot the day we went. The cats were pretty lazy and not very exciting. We did see a tiger and two lions. It's fun to see these majestic creatures. The walking was pretty easy and wheel chair accessible.
