This is probably the only profitable Kmart left in the USA. Coming into this store was a bizarre trip for me. All across America most Kmarts have been shut down, redeveloped or left to rot and let nature reclaim them. Yet, here in far-off tropical Guam, across the International Date Line, one Kmart still stands as a still-functioning example of what was once a titan of retail.
I guess it helps neither Wal Mart nor Target decided to plant their stores on America's most remote territory.
For most Japanese, Korean or other varied East Asian tourists, Kmart is a taste of how big box American retail stores are run. Yet, they'd be shocked if they saw how dire things are for Kmart in the mainland.
If you're an American like me it is like travelling back into the late 90's/early 2000's again. The smell of Little Caesar's pizza wafts into your nostrils as you glance upon the Guam-themed T-shirts and souvenirs before strolling down the toy aisle and try to pry your kid away from the Barbie boxes on the shelves. Will this Kmart still stand once the COVID-19 pandemic inevitably shatters the remainder of the still-standing Sears and Kmarts across America into dust? It would be a surreal memorial to a now rapidly fading retail chain that used to be in nearly every corner of America.
In the meantime, if you are on Guam, grab a few cans of Guam beer (Made in WI, Shhhhhhh!) from the booze aisle, drive on down to the beach, and...
ย ย ย Read moreSuggest you use cash. If their system reboots after you've already made a successful card purchase they'll redo the transaction and ask you to run your card again. This raised some concerns, as I am not a Guam resident and didn't want to depart to my home country without knowing that everything will be settled accordingly. Asked the supervisor for some sort of guarantee and all she gave me was verbal assurance that funds will be credited to my account. As of today, my online statement shows double posting of the kmart purchase and no refunds pending. Contacted my bank and they said it typically takes 3-5 business days to process refunds. It is well over 3-5 days now and still haven't received my refund. Contacting Kmart was somewhat of a hassle. Couldn't find email addresses online, and it took a while to get to someone via phone. By the time I got through I felt like I was stuck in a loop. Finally, they said they would email a document for me to submit to the bank. Was expecting it by the end of the day but it never came. Followed up the next day and they said their internet was down and that it's something they're working on. Checking my email now, still no email from them. Internet still down? Such a huge inconvenience.
Update: Called today (4/28/17) and the customer service supervisor said I had to be physically in Guam and I need to provide my bank...

First they did not want to come in but the allowed me to go to service. No one cared. They tried to call some one but no on came. i asked to talk to a supervisor. They did not care. They only cared about getting their pay and screwing the customer. I gave them the one finger wave and left. I should have never bought it there as their stuff is all junk and the people and employees are rude to Americans. It has been a week latter and bike stopped working. It is violation of the UCC warranties. My credit cards don't work on Gaum so I used bank of Gaum.
