The Funk — Local services in Tarpon Springs

My sister and I visited this place prior to booking our tattoos. We fell in love with the shop and all the eclectic goodies they have for purchase. But what really sold us was one the owners, Valerie, who took the time to match what we wanted with their artist she felt would do the best. Mind you, my sister and I are VERY selective about tattoos and the way people make us feel. This was only going to be our third tattoo and it's taken us over a year to find a place we liked and felt comfortable. When we went today for our tattoos, our artist, Sly, was so kind. She didn't even mind working on our long ago pedicured feet! She did amazing line work and has a very light hand for delicate lines! When we decide it's time for our next ones, we will be visiting her again! While waiting for my sister to be done, we looked around the storefront and found some adorable earrings that are locally made, but the real selling point of the day was talking with Valerie's fiance, Mike, the other owner. He informed me of the vision they have for this shop and had a heavy emphasis on helping the local community, the artists along with those who needed help after the last year's hurricanes. I absolutely love the FUNK! From the moment you walk in the door, you feel like family. Val and Mike are truly gifts to our community. During the recent back to back hurricanes 🌀 in our area, the Funk set up an operations home base at their business and helped thousands of people receive hot meals, clean drinking water, clean clothes, snacks, tools, gloves, cleaning supplies, a break from the chaos of our homes, you name it and they got it for us. Our house was hit hard and we lost almost all on first floor which 2 of our 8 children lived in. They lost almost all their possessions and all their furniture. 🙏 but those are just things. Going thru this time I have realized that the true gifts and treasures in a disaster like this is people like Mike and Val and all the volunteers that have gotten us thru this time. Thank you Mike and Val! From the bottom of my heart. You have blessed not only me, but my hubby, kids, friends, neighbors, strangers, community with your light and love. The Funk has always been the best…but now they’re the greatest. God bless you all 🙏 We love you!...

Where do I begin, this place isn't just a retail location, offering curated goods, along with tattoo and piercing services, this place is a sanctuary for people who celebrate diversity, culture, art, spirituality, holistic wellness, human connection, and so very much more. I've been in this area for about 2 months now caring for my Mum whose health is failing. It was quite by chance that I discovered this haven for folks who would otherwise be destined for the island of misfit toys. This isn't a business, it's a retreat. It's a refuge and a shelter from the storm. I would like to express my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude for accepting me exactly as I am. I'm a long way from my actual home in the Pacific Northwest, but I can rest much easier knowing that I've got a tribe in Tarpon Springs. I walked in this placed feeling a bit tentative and completely defeated, but I walked out, after the first visit, feeling like I've made a connection that could last a very long time.
