I scheduled a large donation pick up 2 weeks prior to the pick up date. As requested, I sent an email the day before pick up describing the contents of the donation. I was told to have the items ready for pick up by 830 am. I took the day off work and had scheduled several various other projects around this pick up, to start the following day, including some construction work. At 9 am I got a robo call from amvets stating their 2 drivers had quit and they had no one to come pick up. I called the number back and the clerk told me that the drivers had quit last week and they had been trying to hire new drivers. I asked to speak with someone in charge. I believe his name was Mike, answered the phone gruffly. He was rude, defensive and did not give me the same information the clerk gave me. He said they just found out this morning. And that it was my problem because I had a donation that wasn't going to be picked up. I told him that I was angry because of the VERY SHORT NOTICE and that so much was hinged on this pick up that would now need to be re worked. When I told him that there was a lot, he said they wouldn't have been able to pick that much up anyway. I said that I had sent the email and told them what there was, he hung up on me. He did tell me to have a nice day tho. I am sorry. I believe in supporting vets and have all my life but if these are the practices of the people facilitating the support of vets, I will find another pace to send my donations. VERY disappointed on...
Read moreThis place is the most ridiculous place to try and donate large goods to. It’s literally a circus. Mike who is supposedly the manager has no clue what is going on and claims that he has no way of getting in contact with his driving staff throughout the day. Really? Never heard of a cell phone? I had an appt for items to be picked up and after many calls on my part to see what time they may be showing up I was finally told 4pm. Nobody showed up and I never got a call. Nor did I get a courtesy call the following day to try and accommodate me for being completely ignored the day prior. Nobody knows what they are doing and has no idea how to direct someone to someone of authority that can handle a situation. I was told that I had to simply make another appt within the next few weeks. People need to be hired that have decision making skills even at the lowest cognitive level. Saying “I don’t know” is just simply not acceptable. I can’t believe these so called employees are allowed to collect a paycheck for doing nothing and not being held accountable. Sad times- will never donate here again- or at least try to since they seem as though they...
Read moreYou're probably wondering how a thrift store can get five stars, but Amvets in Depew NY certainly deserves it. The five stars are relative to OTHER thrift stores. Like all thrift stores, there is a lot of junk, including clothes that have been sitting in closets for 30 years. But the selections are pretty well sorted by size and type of clothing and the quantity is large. And they have some top brand items that are still a bargain (many of the stores owned by Savers have made it hard to find amazing deals). At least 25% of my everyday casual wardrobe comes from this store!
The staff here is mostly young and hipster, which gives the place some trendy vibes.
Some typical thrift store traits are here too: musty smell, barebones decor, interesting clientele, and dusty fitting rooms. But it's a price I'm willing to pay for low price high quality clothing. (Note: my experience is limited to shopping for...
