Tops Friendly Market — Local services in Town of Greece

This is a solid Tops Market. Better than the locations on West Avenue or East Ridge and Carter. It's the working class store for people looking for big sales on things like soda and sausages. Since emerging from bankruptcy my mom and I have noticed a 10-15% price increase on many goods.

This makes them uncompetitive with Wegmans and Walmart for a full grocery shopping experience. Those stores long ago moved away from the hi-low pricing strategy to every day low prices. Tops remains a Hi-Low pricing chain. It's probably due to the smaller geographic footprint.

This location is large, but smaller than the local Wegmans or Walmart so that is a plus for people with limited mobility. This generally holds true for all of their locations.

These departments are run well, never had a bad experience in 4 years with meat, produce or dairy being bad. You can find some real values in the 5 for $20 meat section, especially for the grill. Swap out burgers for Cube steaks, or find a bunch of sirloin cuts for the grill. 10 cube steak 'burgers' or 5 'sirloin cut steaks' worthy of the grill for $20 is a steal.

Tops eggs are far better than Wegmans eggs IMO. Especially if you want to boil eggs for breakfast, Easter or deviled eggs. Wegmans eggs crack and break when boiled. Something has gone very wrong with Wegmans eggs since the 'egg scandal' of the late 90's or 00's. Tops doesn't have that problem.

Tops also carries a lot of name brand items Wegmans and Walmart do not carry. Are you are looking for a grocery or home goods item that you can't find at other places? Tops will have it. They also are unusually early in offering new name brand items. These are good things.

This isn't to say Tops generics are bad. They hold their own to any other generic label. It's just that you have actual options between Tops generic label items, and name brand items. Wegmans can not say the same, their selection is far worse, and Wal-Mart brow beats suppliers to the bare minimum of name brand offerings.

This Tops is second to the Clinton Avenue location in the Rochester area. The Gates location on Buffalo Rd is third IMO. The Mount Read location is clean, well run, staffed well and stocked well. You can find great deals here, and name brand goods you can't find at Wegmans and Walmart.

Tops will periodically run 'meal deal specials' in their ads that are terrific. They are great for any person or family on a tight budget. I also recall no limit on the number of meal deals you can buy. They often include name brand goods, locally baked bread, and wholesome well rounded meals. I survived many a week between jobs thanks to Tops meal deals.

A BOGO (buy one get one free) deal is also not uncommon, much less a buy 2 get 3 or even buy 2 get 4 free sale. Just be prepared to spend more on the original items than you would elsewhere. The averages work out to your favor if you shop the sales and need 3-6 of the item long term.

I also like the gas points, good at any Tops location selling gas. It reminds me of the old green stamp days. I know most of you don't know what that is, ask your parents.

Many a time I have bought Tops Gas at $1.99 a gallon or less for plain old 87 octane. No knocking issues, good mileage, and my mechanic has never called me out for using 'cheap gas', despite my car having a turbo.

Shop the BOGO/BOGT sales on name brand goods, cut the Tops Coupons, use MFG coupons since many local competitors don't even carry the items in the coupon, look for meal deals, get the hard to find stuff, save on gas when it gets high, and go for quicker in and out stops. This is the Tops niche

Tops may only get 20-30% of my grocery bill, but it is an appreciated competitor. I would rather shop Tops than Aldi (German company) or Walmart (well known labor practice and supply chain issues) as a second option to Wegmans. Tops is based here in WNY (Niagara Falls) employs WNY people and deserves a little love IMO.

Greece, I wouldn't give you a nickel for this store,an why pray tell .The whole Plaza of store's "The so called New Greece"- is & was built by this Developer that has his sign up on the Downtown Development of Midtown-Crista I believe his name is called,an why is it takeing so long,well he's good on clean up,I've been told by a reliable source, but you know how that goes,hey,buddy your killing the job an wasting the City's money by adding on extensions of time of development, let alone not being Bank-rolled enough to support the job of completion in a timely matter,plus his credit is crapola,now this same developer has to send let alone find a crew to go fix this "PLAZA in Greece where TOPPS Market is located to re-fix all the improvements,of entrances ,curbs, side walks & various store's 1/2 done ,the electrical work has,to be relocated(found by site map) an dug up to find the breakage in current because of lose in power to run refrigeration of Topps Market & a # of other store's as well,guess who's responsible for this a certain mason & his men would lay a wet footing, then block,with out letting the footing cure,for which the house lost it's whole foundation wall,lumber cracked in the plate of the wall & heaved walled 2x4& joist construction ,now Christ's hired these same men originally through the Bierworths Just for mason work but they couldn't wait,& they are running around doing site work with transit & bubble for which they do not have qualifications for,thus all the problems of curbs,sidewalks, entrances, now city engineers & "Lovely Warren " do you really want to trust this CRISTA of having a sound & solid foundation at Midtown,I wouldn't throw him off the job. I regret that this is the tops nearest to me. On one hand, the remodel looks really good, the store is VERY clean and orderly. On the other hand some of the employees are absolutely miserable to deal with. There’s one girl there who tells us how much she hates her job every time we get into her line and it’s not a good look for the store. I hate getting in her line when she says that too because it’s like I just got there to grab my 3 items for dinner and this little girl is like “ugh I am so over this today, I hate my job, I hate doing this.” As she is scanning my items. It’s happened now 3 times with this same girl. I guess it’s not the entire stores fault that my experience at tops is unpleasant, everyone else is nice enough. I just cross my fingers that we don’t accidentally end up in her line so she can tell us how much she hates her job and customers while being a customer. There are some other honorable mentions, they always have almost all their lights off light they are shutting down. It looks like closing time at 5pm. Not even 1/4 of the store is lit. It’s really strange, I don’t know what that’s about. Also, they always say they have our cat food but it’s never in stock. Really strange and specific items are always completely COMPLETELY out of stock, like someone waits for the shipments and buys up all the Purina Sensitive Stomach Cat Food. It’s bizarre. There’s always a spot for it, but it’s never there. Also don’t buy from the deli there. All their salads are crusty and gross and have been sitting out all day. I ordered a sub a couple weeks ago and my fiancé got some ambrosia and all the other salads were all dried up and nasty and cross contaminated with other salads and the girl who made my sub was abominably rude. She huffed and puffed over one Italian assorted sub. She was SO rude and then when I got home and ate the thing the bread was so gross and stale. You want a good deli go a block...
