I've been in the process of fully digitizing the family video's that I made back in the mid-80's up to the early 2000's on a variety of camcorders. I have many 8mm & digital 8mm tapes, as well as a lesser number of VHS-C tapes and 1 mini-DV tape.

The camcorders that I used to make the 8mm & Digital 8 tapes still work very well, so digitizing them is not an issue. The VHS-C camcorder has a clogged head, but I can use my old VHS player and a special adapter to digitize those.

However the miniDV JVS camcorder doesn't work. Scan A Lot to the rescue!!! Steve successfully digitized my lone tape twice. First to an MP4, then to a ProRes. For the record, the ProRes transfer turned out to be a much higher quality than the MP4.

Before all of you say OF COURSE it did, keep in mind that the MP4 has more than enough data storage capability than the miniDV tape has natively. However in practice, having the file with almost 5 times greater (9GB vs 1.8GB) ProRes data yielded a much better result.

a) Really great customer service. Responsive by phone and text. Set expectations of what would happened, and then followed through on those expectations. For a business like this, good bedside manner is almost more important than the actual. product. That said:

b) Really solid delivery on the actual job. I asked them to convert 100+ khodachrome slides from the 1960s to digital, and the results were amazing. High quality, full color digital pics that I was able to share instantly with my parents and aunts and uncles who are spread all over the country.

The results were unreal. 100s of texts between the older generation, everyone buzzing trying to identify people and places in pictures that had been un-seen for decades. Smiles and joy for a group of 60-70-80 year olds remembering their childhoods.
