Do you love comics? I mean really love comics – the four-colors and smell of newsprint? Do you loving digging for back issues, talking comics, and getting great recommendations from someone really into comics? Then Heroes is the place for you.
I live in Ithaca and had heard of Heroes for years. I stopped over last May around closing time on a Thursday evening and within 15 minutes, knew I had to come back. Jared, the owner, was so personable and connected immediately over comics. I admired an old Joe Kubert cover. Knowing what I might like, he asked if I wanted to check out some books that had come in from a recent collection of bronze age books. I pulled a bunch of DC horror books – Swamp Thing, House of Mystery, Unexpected, etc. They had not yet been priced, but he told me to pull the books, and he’d have them priced for me.
That was in May. Somehow, I could not find an open date to return – even though it’s about 45 min from my house. The pictures of those beautiful bronze age books haunted me when I would occasionally see them on my phone. I was sure those books had been sold.
When I finally made it over to the shop – almost 4 months later – Jared had the books waiting for me (the box even was marked “reserved, don’t touch” to ward off other hands!). That day was a highlight to say the least. I picked up the books (pricing was incredibly fair – given the nice condition/age of the books) and more comic recommendations from Jared.
Jared runs a great shop and supports the comics community and collectors alike. He helps support the creator community - through his support of area cons and in-store signings and helps collectors find those missing issues to complete their collection or just simply fuel their...
Read moreWent to Heroes for the first time yesterday (awesome shop name), and had a blast going through all sorts of random boxes of comics. Spent about 90 minutes there and didn't want to leave. Jared (the owner) is a legend who is super personable and eager to chat and help out. There are a ton of graphic novels and manga, lots of new comics, and heaps of boxes of back issues all over the place. Its not a huge store, but there is a LOT in there. Boxes aren't well organised so if you're looking for very specific issues it may not be your best option, but if you enjoy looking through all sorts of comics from silver age to modern and occasionally finding really interesting gems, I can't recommend it enough. My favorite type of comic shop. I'm definitely eager to go back, found some great 80's comics for very reasonable prices. They also have some very cool shop...
Read moreThis has to be the best comic store that I have been to. Right when you walk in you are transported to simpler times. To times when there is no worry in the world except for things like if Spider-Man is going to defeat the Green Goblin this week or how many people the Joker is going to kill today.
The owner of the store is also the most generous and kind store owner I have personally ever met. If you buy a bunch of comics in bulk (even more expensive ones) he will give you a discount every time; for absolutely no reason.
He also knows his stuff so if you are a newcomer and if you want to get into a new series but dont know where to start then all you have to do is ask and he will set you right up where...
