Edit after owner response: Again, deceptive practices and half truths. Free delivery? So they will drop off to couches that require no set up, to my front door for free? But not carry through a double wide front entry way another 30' and them down in my living room? (I am 100% handicapped. Both myself and my wife are in our 60's and can't lift something like this. Not the drivers fault, and they were nice, so we gave them nice tip.) Took them 8 minutes total. I have security cameras. There WAS a $150 charge times 2 to carry our 2 couches an additional 30' into our home. $300.00 TOTAL! My wife was pressured into signing up a Mathis Reward and Mathis Credit card using Kung Fu math. She joined both, and it wasn't Free! And you are leaving out details, such as an annual $100 annual fee charged to the account to remain a member.
As soon as my wife came home (I let her go by herself and pick what she wanted. I wasn't there to look at or sign papers. She had money and/or a CC to use) I actually read the pages with the details, I called both the finance company and paid the balance e-check and cancelled Mathis Brothers card immediately. I debated with whomever answered the phone about the charges. They were rude, and wouldn't get a supervisor on the phone. They said I could drive back down to the store and they would go through the paperwork with me! I told them I understood the paperwork, AND IT'S DECEPTIVE! Why would I want to waste 1/2 a day, wear and tear on my car and gas only to gripe enough for maybe $50.00? Another tactic I have seen in sales before. You learn a little more about the REAL cost as you pick your furniture, go to pay, finance if you need to. The true cost is revealed a little at a time. Like buying a new car. Same type thing. I can pay cash and did not need financing. This type deceptive practicing is set up to screw over poor people under the guise of "helping" them. I've seen different variations my entire life. Hello! You ran into someone that's forte is math. I understand it.
DO NOT SHOP HERE! Prices are deceptive. Delivery is NOT free, and they won't haul off your old sofa. They talk you into applying for their CREDIT CARD to get free delivery. Then charge you a fee for the card ($139.00), then it's still $149.00 for delivery (for one couch and I'm 7 miles from their warehouse) that they say is NOT a credit card. Because it can only be used in their store. They play "word salad" games with you as the total price keeps increasing. Pay no attention to the LOWER PRICE THEY LURED YOU IN THE STORE WITH. YOU'RE NOT GOING TO GET IT FOR THAT. ** DO NOT SHOP HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! P.S. I had cash, check, debit card, and credit card with plenty of funds to pay. But, was pressured into getting their card, they kept saying, "to save me money." A sofa advertised for $1,899.00, ended up costing me $,2576.00 after taxes and delivery fee. I may have more to add after my million dollar sofa is delivered. I wish I could just cancel all of it. Thanks (sarcasm) Little...
Read moreWould not recommend. I purchased for my commercial space 2/24 (James was an awesome salesman), and updated my phone number to my personal cell phone. Within a few days, delivery was scheduled (2/28). The delivery confirmation went to my husband's email and phone number. So I called the store to update to my phone number, and they said they removed his phone number. Delivery day occurred, and I was missing a piece. When I called to reschedule delivery, the customer service representative was short and told me he could not answer why it wasn't delivered, or give me a delivery window other than "Sunday". On Sunday 3/5, I arrived to my commercial space at the start of the delivery window (still sent to my husband)-12:30-2:30- as my office is a little distance from my residence. I called the delivery line to get a narrowed time frame. I am told they are one stop ahead of me. We wait for another hour. I call again, the service representative tells me that he "can't find the truck" due to a glitch, tells me someone will call me and hangs up. I never got a call the rest of the day. On Monday 3/6 I call, and was met with an unhelpful customer service rep who asked what I was needing from the company...She transfers me to my salesman, who was checking out at Target, and wasn't even on shift. How was he supposed to help? I call back after 6 hours of getting nowhere, and I am told that my chair NEVER MADE IT ON THE TRUCK. I am further told that this delivery has failed inspection twice. I am promised by the rep that it will be out for Friday delivery (Now March 10). On Thursday March 9, my husband again gets confirmation of the delivery. On Friday, I again, sit at my office and wait for delivery. I call, and am told it was out for delivery, and they again never show up. Friday evening I get a call asking how my delivery went, and I tell them not good as I never received it. I ask for a refund at this point. I am told that a manager will call me. All of Saturday passes with no call, So I submitted a customer satisfaction survey through the website on March 11. After hearing nothing, I called again on March 20 (this time to corporate), was asked AGAIN to tell them why I was dissatisfied, and that a manager would call me back. It is now March 24 with no calls. I cannot believe a single person has not tried to make this right, nor provided me with a refund, and that Mathis Home is comfortable with this level of customer service. I ended up purchasing new chairs through another company altogether, in addition to the remaining furniture I had planned to buy...
Read moreMathis Brothers Mattress buyers beware of hidden fees and trickery – Due to past experiences, when I went to purchase a mattress, it was important to have the option to exchange it if there were any problems. I was very transparent with the salesman about this, and he explained in order to exchange a mattress at Mathis Brothers, I would need to:
• become a rewards member for $129 • purchase a mattress pad for $149 • purchase a pillow (which they threw in a $70 pillow for free) • keep the mattress for 30 days
Unfortunately, the mattress was too hard and caused a lot of shoulder and back discomfort when sleeping for my husband and I.
I called the salesman, and he told me that there was a $199 restock fee. What???? I had not been told this before! He swore that he told me about that, and it was in the paperwork that I received in an email AFTER the purchase.
He then said he was sorry about the discomfort but that I had purchased a “guest bedroom” mattress and not a mattress that you would sleep on every night!! Which blew me away, because if he had said that to me, I would’ve NEVER had bought that mattress!
He insisted that he always told his customers that one part of the store is “guest mattresses” and the other side has the higher quality ones that you’d want to sleep on every night.
He claims he told me that AND that there was a restocking fee - but I know for a fact he did not and explained that to him.
He then stated that everyone has a budget, implying that I got what I paid for and that I was a lower budget and lower-class of customer.
I was so insulted.
I think that spending $1,700 on a king size mattress isn’t a cheap thing and didn’t realize in his eyes I was a cheap customer who should have a low-quality mattress sold to her family as they didn’t seem swanky enough.
If you go to Mathis Brother’s (don’t do it!) to purchase a mattress, be sure to ask where the guest bed mattresses are sold and avoid that area!
I spoke to a manager who said he’d cut the restock fee in half.
It’s a gesture however, not enough for me to forget this experience and be out some money.
At this point I want to make this exchange and pray that this next and probably last mattress will be of good quality, comfortable and something I’ll enjoy sleeping on...
