I took a very expensive tourmaline ring in to have the stone setting slightly tightened. After I picked it up, I realized the oval stone had been set sideways. I took it to a different jeweler and he said that the guy had broken the five carat gem,glued it and reset it the wrong way so the glue wouldn't show and,of course, never said anything.
