I wanted to take a moment to share some feedback regarding a recent visit I made to your shop, as a fellow store owner and TCG enthusiast who is new to the area.
On my first visit (a Saturday), I brought in a collection of singles, a few sequential PSA 10 slabs, and several IRs. I was informed by the young employee working that day that the owner was out restocking other locations and suggested I return during the week when the owner would be available. Despite living roughly 45 minutes away, I made the trip back on Monday with the same inventory.
During that visit, the owner briefly reviewed my cards, indicated interest in many of them (asking the employee not to pull any duplicates), and began pricing them out manually since the Collector App was down. After about 45 minutes, I was given a cash offer of $345 or a trade-in value of $390.
Initially, I was inclined to accept the cash, but after seeing some slabs in the display case that caught my eye (totaling around $545), I expressed interest in trading and covering the difference. The younger employee assisting me sought clarification on pricing from another older gentleman with silver hair, and that’s where things took an unfortunate turn.
Despite the employee explaining that the owner had already approved the trade-in, the older gentleman abruptly shut down the transaction, stating that “these deals don’t make sense.” He then proceeded to reprimand the employee quite harshly in full view of myself and another customer. The situation became uncomfortable as the employee tried to explain he was following previous instructions, but was dismissed and taken to the back, where yelling could be heard. He never returned to the floor.
At that point, I was informed that none of the cards were being taken, aside from possibly five or six, which contradicted the earlier agreement. To salvage the trip, I ended up trading for a few lower-value slabs, but the entire interaction left a very negative impression.
As someone who runs a retail business, I fully understand the need for sound decision-making and clear guidelines. However, I also believe strongly in coaching employees constructively and privately, especially when there’s confusion caused by mixed signals. Publicly belittling a staff member not only undermines their confidence but also creates a tense environment for customers.
My first experience at the shop was very positive, and I was hopeful about establishing an ongoing relationship with a local store for buying, selling, and trading. Unfortunately, the second visit was among the most disappointing I’ve had at a TCG shop.
I hope this feedback is taken in the spirit it is intended as a perspective from someone who respects the business and the community...
