Alaçatı, İzmir'in 80km batısında yer alır.
Alaçatı'nin tarihi M.Ö. 3000’lere kadar uzanır. M.Ö. 10. yüzyılda Alaçatı, İyonya bölgesınınnin tam merkezinde bulunur. Antik dönemdeki ismi ise “Agrilia”dır. Agrilia bir iyon köyüdür. Bölgenin en büyük iyon şehri ise Erythrai'dir.
Sırasıyla Lydia, Pers, Bergama Krallığı, Roma, Bizans ve 14. yüzyılda Cenevizlilerin hakimiyetine girmiştir.
16. yüzyıl Osmanlı döneminde Alacaat isimli bir aşiretin yeleşmesiyle önem kazanmaya başlar. Bır hıkayeye göre bölge ağasının bir alaca atı varmış. Alaca atlı kelmesinden türeme ihtimali de vardır. Yine 16. yüzyılda bölgeyi Piri Resi ziyaret eder. 1566 yılında Osmanlı Sakız adasını fetheder ve bölgeye bir Türk aşireti olan Alacaat aşireti yerleştirlir. 17. yüzyıla gelindiğinde, dönemin sadrazamı, güneyi bataklık olan bölgenin ıslah edilmesini buyurur.
Verimli topraklara sahip olan bölgeye 19. yüzyılın ortalarında Haci Memiş ayan olarak atanır. (Ayan: devletin, asker ve vergi toplama işlerini üstlenen kişilerdir.) Osmanlı ayani Hacı Memiş, depremlerle yıkılmış olan Sakız Adası’ndaki yoksullaşan Rum nüfusu çeşitli işlerde çalışmak üzere Alacaat köyüne davet eder. Rum işçilerin katkıları sonucunda Alaçatı’nın güneyindeki bataklık bölge kurtarılarak yerleşime açılır. Hacı Memiş, Sakız Adası’ndaki Rum nüfusunu bölgeye çağırır. Alacaat köyünde sıtmaya yol açan bataklığı kurutmak üzere, Alaçatı Limanı’na bir kanal açılır. Açılan kanal ise sonradan gemilerin yanaştığı bir liman olur. Yöredeki toprak sahibi Türkler, kanal inşası için gelen Rum işçilere tarlalarını imar edip işlemeleri koşulu ile verir. Böylece denizden bir kaç kilometre içeride bir köy kurulur. Rumların yöreye yerleşip Türk toprak sahiplerinin verimli tarlalarını kiralamasıyla Alaçatı’da bağcılık da gelişmeye başlar. Yine bu dönemde Avrupa bağlarında bir hastalık kol gezer. Avrupalılar, şarap ihtiyaçlarını karşılamak için farklı bağlara yönelirler. Verimli ve sağlıklı bağlara sahip ve de limanı bulunan Alaçatı için bu büyük bir fırsat olmuştur. Limanı sayesinde şarap ihracatıyla zengin bir yerleşim yeri haline gelmiştir. Maddi olanakları geliştikçe işlettikleri tarlaları satın almaya başlayan Rumlar ile birlikte ticaret hayatı da hareketlenir. Bugün Alaçatı’nın birer birer restore edilmekte olan göz alıcı taş evlerinin çoğu, 1850-1890 yılları arasında inşa edilen bu tarihi evlerdir. Buraya yerleşen Rumlar, yörenin imarında önemli rol oynamışlardır. 1878 ve 1881 yılında 2 büyük deprem meydana gelir ve evlere zarar verir.
1895 yılu nufus sayımına göre, Alaçatı"nın nufusu 13845 kişidir ve bu nufusun sadece 132 kişisi müslumandır. Ancak 1912 yılındaki Balkan Savaşı’nda, Balkanlar’dan kaçan Girit, Yugoslavya, Selanik ve Makedonya’dan gelen müslüman göçmenlerin yerleştirilir. Bağları ve şarabı ile ünlenen bölgenin geçim kaynağı, nüfus değişimi ile birlikte tütün ekimi, zeytin, enginar, anason, narenciye, kavun, sakız ağacı ve hayvancılık olarak dönüşür. Balkan Savaşıyla ve 1. Dünya Savaşıyla birlikte Rum nufus da göç etmek zorunda kalır. 1. Dünya Savaşı bitmesiyle buradan göçmek zorunda kalmış bazı aileler tekrar geri dönerler ama bu durum fazla uzun sürmeyecektir. 1922 yılında tekrar buradan ayrılmak zorunda kalmışlardır. 1924 yilinda Türkiye ile Yunanistan arasında imzalanan “mübadele anlaşması” ile Türkiye’deki yerleşik Ortodoks Rumlar Yunanistan’a gönderilir. Bu uygulama ile 2 milyona yakın insan göç etmeye zorlanır.
Rumlar Alacatıya, Alatsata ismini vermiş. Göçmen Türkler ise bunu Alaçatı"ya çevirmiş. Alaçatıdan göçmek zorunda kalmış olan Rumlar dünyanın farklı köşelerine göçmüşler ama Alatsata ismini yaşatmışlardır. Günümüzde Girit adasında Nea Alatsata, Avustralyada ve Amerikada şehirler kurmuşlardır.
2. dünya savaşına kadar. Alaçatı limanı İzmir"in ihracat limanı olarak kullanılmıştır.

This is a wonderful little town west of Izmir, near Cesme. Like Urla and Sirince, it is a traditional village that has successfully turned its historical center into a posh tourist attraction, with hundreds of boutiques, coffee shops and restaurants, as well as craftsmen and artists who sell their wares on mostly pedestrian streets. The town is built on a hill, so the streets can be steep at times, but never too strenuous. The architecture there is pretty, because it has an older feel to it. There's definitely history there. Parking can be an issue, so you may have to drive a bit before finding a space. Expect to walk quite a bit. Well worth the drive and the time to visit. Please note that although there is a marina, the town is not near the water.

It is one of the most traditional towns in Turkey🇹🇷 with stone houses, narrow streets, boutique hotels and restaurants with tables on the streets." Alaçati is said to be the most beautiful town in türkiye - and indeed, its streets so picturesque, you even don't know where to start and to end taking pictures 📸👌😅😍😁
The only downside of this place is that it's way too full and packed with people and due to massive tourism prices for food are pretty high....🙄

Eşimle birlikte Alaçatı Çarşı’ya gittik ve gerçekten çok keyifli bir gün geçirdik. Sokaklar oldukça canlıydı, insanlar eğleniyor, müzikler çalıyor ve genel olarak çok hoş bir atmosfer vardı. Aradığınız her şeyi burada bulmak mümkün: sabah kahvenizi içebileceğiniz şirin kafeler, güzel bir kahvaltı yapabileceğiniz yerler, akşam yemeği için şık restoranlar ve keyifli barlar…
Alaçatı, hem gündüz hem de gece ayrı bir tat veriyor. Ancak özellikle yaz aylarında ciddi anlamda kalabalık olabiliyor, bu da zaman zaman biraz bunaltıcı hale gelebiliyor. Bu yüzden özellikle yemek yiyeceğiniz yerlere önceden rezervasyon yaptırmanızı kesinlikle tavsiye ederim.
Tarihi dokusu, taş evleri ve dar sokaklarıyla Alaçatı hem fotoğraf severler hem de keyifli vakit geçirmek isteyenler için harika bir destinasyon. Bir kez gelenin tekrar gelmek isteyeceği bir yer…

My partner and I visited Alaçatı Çarşı, and we had a truly enjoyable experience. The streets were lively, full of people having fun, music playing, and the atmosphere overall was vibrant and welcoming. You can find everything you’re looking for here — cozy cafés for your morning coffee, places for a nice breakfast, and charming restaurants and bars for the evening.
Alaçatı offers a unique charm both during the day and at night. However, especially in the summer, it can get extremely crowded, which might feel overwhelming at times. That’s why I highly recommend making reservations in advance for any popular restaurants or venues.
With its historic architecture, stone houses, and narrow streets, Alaçatı is a perfect spot for photography lovers and anyone looking to spend quality time in a beautiful setting. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again.

I visited Ilıca beach in June, the most striking thing was the waste of the luxurious hotel that they are building on the first line of the beach. There was cement and wood as well as sharp objects all around. We visited the beach in the morning around 11 o’clock and it was obvious that no cleaning is done daily nor was there any cleaning personal, or any security. There was not even one rubbish bin. People throw all the rubbish along the beach and the municipality doesn’t even bother to place bins to avoid this problem. As a foreigner it seemed such an abuse of natural beauty and it is no wonder that I cannot recommend such a place or talk good things about Çesme abroad. In the pictures you can also see dead seagulls, which most probably had to eat the plastic waste that the people dumped on the beach and there was not only one. While walking along the beach we saw several dead animals on the shore. It is such a shame on part of Çesme municipality and I will send these photos to higher authorities.

I love alacati beach
Ilıca is the one of the most beautiful beaches in Turkey. This is a public beach with small cafes and parasol&sunbed renters. There is Sheraton Hotel near the middle of the beach but you can pass through it by walking. This beach is even more stunning if you can visit it when there isn't any wind from the northerly directions, unfortunately 90% of the time it is very windy! The food and drinks sold along the beach are modestly priced especially compared to the expensive beach clubs of Cesme. One parasol and two sunbeds can be rented for 20-25TL or you can directly lay on the warm sandy beach! The water is quite warm compared to other areas in Cesme thanks to warm underground water coming to surface near the beach. You should definitely check it out if you are in the region. One warning, on Sundays it is very crowded so try to avoid it on Sundays.

Ilıca Plajı is a beautiful public beach with white sand, a beach club, and shallow depth. Unfortunately, it is often crowded, especially in July and August.
This plajı is located 7 kilometers east of the center of Cesme, in the resort town of Ilyka. The length of the beach line is 2 kilometers, 200 meters of which belongs to the most luxurious Sheraton Cesme hotel in the resort of Cesme. The rest is publicly available.
There are umbrellas and sun loungers. The price is 150-300 liras for a set of an umbrella, a small table, two sun loungers, and two towels. The water on the Ilyka beach is considered curative, as the water of mineral springs comes out directly from the bottom. The depth is shallow (up to 1.5 meters) at a distance of up to 100 meters from the coast.

Quite a nice beach with shallow and clear waters. Probably the best among public beaches.
There is no entrance fee, but if you can't find parking spots in the side streets, you might want to go for paid parking which is around 30TL.
Umbrellas can be rented at the Kiosk for 40TL with a deposit of 110TL.
They have quite a nice social distancing measure with designated zoned areas for visitors. It also comes with a clay pot for trash in each spot.
Sadly, majority of the visitors were unlucky when it comes to intelligence distribution, as they were unable to put their cigarette butts and beer cans into the trash bin 1 meter next to them. Hence the beach is full of trash (litter and ignorant people alike).

Deniz muhteşem, tertemiz, su sıcaklığı adı gibi ılıcık, denizden çıkmak istemeyeceksiniz. Denizin içinde neredeyse hiç taş yok ve derinlikler hariç yosunda yok. Serin deniz suyu severlere göre pek değil 😂 Plaj geniş, uzun ve çok büyük. Çok kalabalık olmasına rağmen plajın genişliği nedeniyle rahatsızlık hissetmiyorsunuz. Denizi genelde dalgalı ve rüzgarlı olabiliyor. Halk plajı olduğu için giriş ücretsiz. Plajda ücretsiz soyunma kabini, duş ve wc kabinleri var ama genelde sıra beklersiniz ve hiç temiz değiller. Kumsal büyük araçlar ile temizleniyor, güzel bir hizmet. Şemsiyenizi sabitlemek için yanınızda mutlaka uzun sağlam ip ve içine kum doldurmak & ağırlık yapması amacıyla 2-3 adet bez torba bulundurmalısınız. Aksi halde uçacak olan güneş şemsiyeniz ile insanları yaralamanız ve sıkıntı çıkması olası. Çevreden uçabilecek şemsiyelere karşıda tetikte olmalısınız. Plaja yakın işletme personeli kumsalda dolaşıp yiyecek & içecek siparişi [nakit + kredi kartı] alıyor. Ayrıca plajda şemsiye ve şezlong kiralayanlar var. Çadır kurmak yasak, zabıta gelip hemen kaldırmanızı isteyecektir. Seyyar satıcılarda simit 35-50 TL, haşlanmış mısır 75-100 TL bandında, fiyatlar değişken ve yüksek. Mobil buzdolabı ile her türlü ihtiyacınızı götürmekte büyük fayda var. Otopark olayı sıkıntılı, ücretsiz park yeri bulabilmek için çevrede bir kaç tur atmanız gerekecektir. 2025 yaz sezonu otopark ücreti 300 TL. Geçen sezon otoparklar 150 TL alıyordu. Plaj önüne ve kaldırıma park ederseniz bazen park cezası yazıyorlar. Gece vakit geçirmek içinde oldukça keyifli bir lokasyon. Malesef halkımız kumsalı çok pisletiyor. Kumsalda mısır koçanı, her türlü şişe, don & atlet, pis çocuk bezi, ped, izmarit, çeşit çeşit çöp dolu. Kumsalın başından sonuna hergün 1 traktör dolusu eminim fazlası da vardır çöp toplanıyor ve bence çok utanç verici görüntüler oluşuyor. Bazen deniz içine de çöp atıyorlar. Sigara izmaritini kumsalda söndürmek adeta gelenek olmuş. O izmaritleri malum silikon tıpacı yerine kullanmak lazım ya!

If you are arriving in Cesme by sea it will be one of the first and most memorable landmarks you will see. Or if you drive or walk to the seaside promenade in the town center of Cesme, you will see it rise up majestically beside you. It is Cesme's most special building, it has a history of over 500 years and it is also the building you will notice every time you venture into Cesme's center. The Cesme Castle and Museum is a piece of history that must be visited by every visitor to Cesme.
The Cesme Castle was ordered built in 1508 by the Ottoman ruler Beyazit II. The castle was built on the waterfront but because the sea has subsequently been filled there is currently a road passing in front of it. The edifice has recently undergone a successful renovation and you will witness a typical Ottoman castle. By climbing up the stairs on either side you will reach the top where you can view a 360 degree panoramic view of Cesme.
As you climb up, you will see two different courtyards where some historical artifacts and tombstones are exhibited. There are also two museums inside the castle; one of them has historical artifacts brought over from the nearby Ionian city of Erythrai (current day Ildir) and the other museum has relics from the three day naval war fought between the Ottomans and Russians.
The castle also plays host and serves as an interesting venue to summer concerts which are part of the annual Izmir Festival.

Beware: Tourist Tax Trap!!! 6€ For Foreigners (260 Lira) and 100 Lira for Locals. I was a bit dismayed as the foreign price was not listed in the front of the castle ticket office. So it was misleading as I thought the entry price was 100 Lira. You could just by pass the line and enter for FREE though if you move to the left and go up the stairs. They were not monitoring the entry very well. So if you want to enter for FREE. Just veer left of the line and go up the steps. I regret not doing this as there was not much to see in the castle or the museum. As I left the castle, I passed the ticket office again (entry/exit is the same) and I passed my ticket on to another foreigner so they could have free entry; that way they didn’t fall for the same tourist tax trap that I had succumbed to.
PROS: the views, and some of the museum displays.
CONS: the hidden tourist tax price, the castle was not fully developed for tourism (plenty of areas blocked off to visitors and empty spaces)

We came on a weekday where the weather is so so. There are hardly any tourists in there, giving us enough opportunities to explore the castles however we want. For those interested in Ottoman-Russian history, you will enjoy the site as a naval fort. Seems difficult to imagine so peaceful a place as of here nowadays was once the pivotal point for a great naval war. If you want to see beauty or other more artistic aspects, this castle may not be particularly interesting to visit. The ticket as of 2025 is 6€. Parking is easy outside the castle on the street. The area is easy to walk around and you could find restaurants after the visit along the streets and into the small town. I suppose it should be rather touristy but doesn’t seem to be the case in winter.
