I showed up early in the evening for dinner and was greeted with indifference, which was unusual based on my other experiences in Antigua. They seemed reluctant to seat me without a reservation despite the place being empty. I ordered the fresh catch and it was a little mushy. It was a weird combination of flavors too- most places offer a spice rub or capers and lemon. This was a mix of both and they didn’t really go together well. The sides were fine. The space is odd- uneven cement floors painted red, dark walls, and corrugated tin- the chairs were too low for the tables and they were uncomfortable. Much better meals and experience elsewhere.

I am pretty stingy in adding places to my ā€œfavoritesā€ list but this place went on almost the minute I arrived! The staff was so fun and absolutely part of the experience. The food was something I will dream about for a long time, and the specialty cocktail we had, the Old Fashioned Rum Punch was really memorable. And for God’s sake make sure someone in your party gets the Jerk Chicken! The thing I loved about this place was that it did not feel like a touristy restaurant. We’ve eaten at some great spots but many feel like they rarely see local patrons. This did not feel that way at all! I cannot wait to return and go to Trappas again!

The ambience was lovely and the waiter was very jovial and friendly. However the food wasn't that good. The schnitzel pork was fresh and the rice was salty. I didn't get the rice that advertised (Jasmine). I got regular nice and that wasn't cool. Didn't smell the aroma or the taste of the rice. When I asked one of the waitress, she said, that's the rice they cook in the kitchen. I replied, Ms! I didn't smell the aroma of the rice and she laughed. That just cemented my belief. Based on the recommendations I got, I expected a 5 star service with great food. šŸ™

I came to Trappas in Antigua after hearing great things, especially about the steak and mashed potatoes. They didn’t have the steak, which was disappointing, but what truly ruined the night was the behavior of the manager, Julian. After our meal, he initiated an unsolicited conversation about race and culture. He said Black people lack culture, called New York women aggressive, and claimed slavery isn’t a valid reason for the struggles Black families face today. I came to enjoy dinner, not to be disrespected or lectured. Julian’s comments were offensive, ignorant, and completely inappropriate for someone in a customer-facing role. This was my last night on vacation, and it was overshadowed by a conversation that never should have happened. I do not recommend this restaurant to Black Americans or anyone who expects basic respect while dining. When they go low, take your...
