I've decided on several occasions to blow up my previous reviews of this San Telmo institution and this is one of those times. I won't change my star rating because the beer is still good, I still like the vibe, and the fish 'n' chips really haven't changed. However...
I just had the Gibraltar Burger and it honestly made me angry. When hearing folks discuss what's the best burger in San Telmo I always just say you can't get much better than Gibraltar. Now I'd steer folks to the fish 'n' chips and suggest...hell, I don't know. None of them are very good at the moment.
I didn't specify how I wanted it cooked because in the past I didn't have to. It came out Argentine well-done and therefore too dense and too hard. I don't know how people can't eat burgers cooked like this, honestly. But worse than that, Gibraltar must be getting the same buns that El Banco Rojo is getting because this one compressed into a gummy, gross disc within two bites. So, hard patty and gommy, flat bun equals a terrible texture. It really p*ssed me off. Used to the burger was juicy and almost so big that some friends of mine couldn't finish it. This one was not juicy and I had to force myself to finish it because I was hungry and it was 190 pesos. Just awful, almost as bad as the dried-out Paty I had the other day in Once station.
Further, instead of squeeze bottles Gibraltar has switched to individual packets of ketchup and mustard. 6 times out of 10 in Argentina I can't open them for the life of me so after fishing to find the single packet of ketchup in a sea of mustards, I just threw it back in disgust.
Finally, I don't understand the way food is served here anymore. The burger came out sitting on top of the fries on a small bowl-like plate. What maroon decided this makes sense? Simple white plates are too hard to wash now? LIke any sane person, I took the burger off and put it on a napkin so I could get to the fries without moving the burger. Seriously. This. Is. Stupid. I don't even know what affectation they're after with this.
After all that, I'm surprised Gibraltar hasn't switched to those plastic ice-cream napkins you get in pizza joints here. Isn't that the next logical step?
This is already the most expensive beer in the neighborhood. I think Gibraltar can afford not to...
Read moreWe thought we were going here for a drink and a game if Pool. Unfortunately there were some locals that treat the game of pool as a local friendship contest which they don’t allow outsiders to join. We wrote our name down on a board and waited for 2 hours to find we had to play a winner from the previous game and had to play by the rules of the bar. Therefore we had to play with the last local who won (which usually would have been fine) but had to play specific rules and other people watching told us to leave and play pool elsewhere before we even started. I would class myself as an accommodating person from the north of the UK who would play pool with anyone but despite being as kind as possible I have never been told to leave a pool table as much as I had today. Honestly the worst place I’ve ever been, do NOT visit for a ‘friendly game of pool’...
Read moreI sought out this very aesthetically pleasing pub partly for atmosphere and history and partly because the League cup was on. To my delight Newcastle United secured their first domestic trophy in 70 years. Also delightful was the range of beer and good humour on offer. I didn't have any food but I've no reason to believe that it was not also of a high standard. The pub is located in the San Telmo area in a fairly touristy area. I would definitely recommend it as it's got a British/Argentinian sort of fusion and is very welcoming. I've read previous responses from the owner and I would say it typifies the good humour of the place. I would have gone wether the football was on or not. There are several good restaurants nearby also. Many Thanks for...
