Findon Hotel — Restaurant in Adelaide

Celebrated my niece’s birthday at the Findon (Rat and Parrot) yesterday. It was busy when we arrived but the male staff member was most obliging. We didn’t like the table we had been allocated as it was by the door. He happily showed us to a different table. He offered to take care of the birthday cake I was carrying and made me a coffee - just the way I like it. We ordered lunch and were concerned that it might take a long time because there were a couple of very large tables of people. I was most particular about my order and the young woman who served me was very helpful. We were surprised to be served relatively quickly and the food was delicious. My niece was impressed by the roast pumpkin and quinoa salad and the salmon which I asked to be served only with the steamed green vegetables and no mashed potato or hollandaise sauce was cooked to perfection. When it came to coffee and birthday cake, my niece is most particular about The way she likes her coffee. The staff member who made it came over to check that my niece was happy. I have to say that when my niece said we were having lunch at the Findon, I was surprised. We hadn’t been there for a very long time And I wasn’t sure that it was the best venue for her to choose. How wrong was I? I honestly can’t fault the staff. Were heading to the basketball and thought a meal nearby would be a good idea. Not this place though. We rang to book for 5:30pm and arrived at the Rat and Parrot to find there was no booking for us after waiting to be served for 5 minutes. The barman suggested we may be booked in at The Topaz next door, which we were, would have been nice to have been told that on the phone. The staff didn't appear to want to step out of their specific role, or know how the ordering process went, and we spent another 5 minutes moving up and down the bar after starting under the order here sign and being told we needed to go to the other end to order. We were then told to go back to the other end where we started! The daughter was told she wasn't able to get the pizza she wanted as they had run out of adult pizza bases, so she ordered something else only to be told that they actually were available, communication was terrible between the staff. By now 15 minutes had elapsed and it was a further 30 minutes and having to ask where our food was before the kids meals came out. In the mean time tip off time was getting ever closer and the missus getting more stressed. Our meals finally arrived 5-10 minutes later with the excuse of the kitchen being down a chef, something that should have been mentioned at the start. We had dinner here last night (New Year’s Eve). I really wanted to leave a great review as the staff and their service was 12/10! The place was very quiet (3 other small tables of people who were eating) and the staff were friendly and polite but unfortunately our meals were a bit hit and miss. We tried to order using the app but the specials weren’t put on there so we had to order all meals at the bar, we ordered the steak special, a rump and crumbed fish. No free garlic breads were provided even though we couldn’t order using the app at no fault of our own. I had the rump cooked med with mash potatoes, salad and gravy. Rump was very dry, over cooked, tough, gravy very thick and gluggy, salad was a handful of mixed salad leaves and 1 piece of tomato. I could only eat the mash and 3 cuts of steak (my partner ate rest of the meat so it wasn’t wasted). My partner enjoyed the steak special, the steak was ordered med rare and came out closer to med cooked so was still good. Our friend had the fish and said it was ok. All servings were a good size. And we didn’t wait long which was good. Our table surface was very sticky for some reason. The only reason I didn’t send back the steak was out of politeness and we needed to get to somewhere else.
