I have visited Singapore a couple of times only. As far as I know about Singaporean cuisines, Black Pepper Crab, Bak Kut Teh, Hainanese Chicken Rice, Hokkien Mee, Char Kway Teow, Laksa, Satay and Kaya Toast etc. are very popular and could be considered as typical Singaporean food.
As recommended by my colleague, I visited Singapore House for dinner last Friday, 24 January 2025. Spot parking was available at the back of the restaurant via access from Avenue Road.
The menu was quite simple, as there were limited choices. Banquets were available but the food was generally available from the à la carte menu. To be honest, their prices of banquets were really expensive. I reckoned my family members would not eat too much curry or oily Asian food so we decided to order a few things from the à la carte menu.
Most of the popular Singaporen food in my mind was not available from the menu. However, I would not challenge that the food offered by this restaurant was not authentic Singaporen food. I heard that there are many Malaysians and Indians who live in Singapore, so I would readily accept any Malaysian-style food or Indian curry-like food as Singaporean food😅
Anyway, after waited for about 20 minutes, all the food that we ordered were arrived. The portion of the dishes were quite reasonable and their favour tasted really good. My only complaint was that on the chicken fried rice, which was basically an egg fried rice with mini chicken nuggets which I never tried before, and unfortunately I didn't enjoy it. I thought simply fried rice by using chicken thigh diced instead of mini nuggets would be good enough.
The decoration of this restaurant was quite classic. It looked like a mixture of western antiques and eastern antiques, a complete nostalgia that offers quite a nice dining atmosphere.
What surprised me was that my family was the only one Asian group in this restaurant on that night. It was funny that even the waiters and waitresses were not Asian. Anyway, as the quality of the Asian food was quite high, I would not believe that a non-Asian who could have cooked such delicious Asian meal😝
If you just want to try some good Asian food but don't bother what typical Singaporean food should look like, I would highly recommend you to come and try this restaurant. (PS: name is not important, it's important to have more good food in this...
Read moreDinner at @singaporehouseadl a couple of weeks ago. We have not been here for many years! I remember the food was good but nothing too special, and I think it is still about the same (similar menu too). The food was pretty tasty, and the service was prompt and efficient. The consistency is good, and appreciated. . Chicken satay: pretty decent, and the peanut sauce was tasty! . Baked mushrooms with cheese and sambal: these were really yummy! Quite a fusion of flavours. The sambal was not really sambal though - it tasted more like chilli jam that wasn't spicy at all. Would have been nicer if they used proper sambal. . Soft shell crab sliders: these sliders were absolutely delicious! Definitely can't go wrong 😜😜. . Eggplant tempura: another good dish that you can't go wrong with. Lightly fried but crispy on the outside, and soft eggplant on the inside. . Salt and pepper squid: these were nicely fried, but I was a bit confused by the sauce - it was a bit too sweet for my liking. Would have been nicer if it was a bit spicer. . Sticky pork: caramelised pork belly with Asian salad and black vinegar. This was delicious! Super tender pork belly. Just can't go wrong if you enjoy pork belly ☺️. . Cauliflower and pear salad: I quite enjoyed this side dish - bold cumin and tumeric flavours. Delicious! . Yellow duck curry: nicely done. Tasty duck! . Oven baked fish: pretty tasty fish in...
Read moreThere is nothing Singaporean about Singapore House. Friends of mine chose this place for lunch; no idea why. The decor is not really identifiable- a mixture of ideas that are a bit confusing. The menus were worn and ratty- always a sign that a place is not getting the love it deserves. The food menu has a mixture of Asian curries, and noodle dishes that you’d get at a suburban strip restaurant or a food court. It’s very ordinary but expensive: 4 dumplings for $18.00. That is ridiculous. They were no different to the frozen potstickers I bought last week from my local Korean supermarket except those were tastier. We had a side of noodles which honestly were no better than me throwing a packet of Hokikien noodles into a wok. My fish curry was quite was decent enough, probably an Indian curry from Goa or Kerala because, as it is stated on the menu, the restaurant does Asian food (but not from Singapore). That means, no Singapore chilli crab either but they are “working on it”, said the waiter. The place, at lunchtime, was completely devoid of any atmosphere. It’s in Frewville for gods sake, and felt like it relies on people who know nothing about food, but think Singapore House sounds exotic, to keep it...
