We were after a cafe serving breakfast that was a little different to the cookie cutter approach most venues in Brisbane have (including our hotel that day)
Reserving a table online was stupendously simple. Can other cafes please take note?
This joint is adjacent to Wooloowin train station, which has extremely frequent rail services. Onsite parking is limited but we did nab a park easily on a Sunday morning. I suppose you could always use the QR parking facility across the road on weekends if busy. This cafe also appears well patronised by roadies (road cyclists) with a dedicated bike rack at the rear.
A polite and efficient young lass greeted us, and we were seated quickly. An animated gentleman of southern German appearance (possibly the owner?) was hurriedly igniting patio heaters for patrons adjacent to us. Asked us a couple of times how everything was going. My wife and I live in Toowoomba - we were dressed in T-shirts and shorts and thought the atmosphere was warm and pleasant enough without supplemental heating.
Right, enough background - and onto the food. Drinks were hot chocolate (wife) and long black (myself). According to my wife the hot chocolate was "good" but my coffee was rather average (I feel due to the quality of the beans rather than the barista. We're spoilt in Toowoomba with great coffee almost everywhere)
My wife had the Pretzel Benedict and I had the Bauernfrühstück (mit extra mushrooms). Food was good without being outstanding (other reviewers who state this is the best food outside of Germany have arguably never been to Germany, or experienced decent German food in Australia). The curry ketchup sauce was delicious and you can purchase it at the register.
When we went to pay there was some confusion - another party had mistakenly paid for our table and we ended up paying for theirs (my wife is the daughter of a Dutchman and consequently picked up on this before the staff did). Fortuitously in our favour (slightly)
Outdoor seating is under marquees which could prove problematic in a Brisbane afternoon storm. I'd love to return here for an evening meal to see how their schweinshaxe compares to...
Read moreThis is a great place to catch up with friends/family or just enjoy great German food. My partner and I were looking for a place with delicious German classics and this place delivered! We went for dinner and got the curry wurst and the pork schnitzel, which were full of flavour and perfectly cooked. Honestly, the food is really worth the money (especially with the portion sizes). We also got the pretzel and the Flammkuchen as appetisers and they were soft and sensational! A small detail I would mention is that I felt the pretzel and the curry wurst with the chips were slightly over salted. This was noticeable as our table had not been given any water to drink (even though I had asked for it). This was the only thing that let the night down for us, as we felt overall it took a while for staff to notice us to take our orders (and bring us the water we asked for). We do note that the restaurant was busy, so we understand why it may have been difficult to keep everyone happy. Also, the parking and surrounding area was lacking lighting. However, the staff were super nice, and the restaurant itself is warm and welcoming, with lots of memorabilia to look at (and fun German music). My partner and I will definitely be coming back to try out the unique...
Read moreI had a really disappointing experience at this restaurant that left a terrible taste beyond the meal itself. I ordered the sausage platter for two, which initially came with none of the side dishes, including the potatoes. After noticing this, I enquired if they were still coming, and while I was brought some sauces, the potatoes still never arrived.
By the time we finished our meal, the potatoes had not shown up, so I briefly mentioned it when I went to pay. The gentleman at the counter informed what seemed to be the manager, who immediately became defensive and visibly agitated. He asked, in an accusatory tone, why I hadn’t said anything sooner. I was shocked by his response and felt uncomfortable. He dismissed the idea of offering any form of compensation despite the mistake, stating that it was not possible. The encounter left me feeling blamed and uncomfortable.
I was given a coffee voucher for a café I don’t even live near. It felt more like a forced gesture than a sincere apology and did little to make up for the experience. I understand mistakes happen, but the way the situation was handled was incredibly disappointing, and I left feeling unheard and unappreciated. I would like to note that the serving staff were kind and...
