Topdog Gourmet — Restaurant in Brisbane City

We had such high hopes for our first visit to this new local spot. We were bitterly disappointed. Even giving consideration to the fact that it was their 2nd weekend this place is extremely under prepared and under experienced to be running a busy suburban cafe. Our coffee orders took over 30 minutes. The coffee was ok but lukewarm. After waiting another 30-45 minutes we queried were our breakfast orders were. The children’s meals hadn't even arrived. They were pleasant and apologetic explaining their newbie status and assured us the meals were moments away. We waited some more…. Eventually an hour and a half later meals started to arrive.. first the two children’s breakfasts and then 3 adult meals staggered out. There were 4 of us. Again we waited. Eventually they fessed up and said they had forgotten the order and could make it now. Unfortunately we had run out of both time and patience. It was time to go. After all of the failings in the service we were hoping the food would outshine their incompetence and make up for everything. Again we were disappointed. The kids pancakes were thick and underwhelming (pancakes and Nutella underwhelming to a 6 year old … unheard of I know!). The omelette was covered in rocket to disguise the average skills of the omelette maker and it was a tad tasteless. The Veggie breakfast had near raw poached eggs, dry falafel, undercooked tomatoes and cold toast. The Eggs Benedict had extremely hard poached eggs (not a customer request), a minuscule amount of mushrooms (the added extra) and a pile of fatty bacon. Again the disappointment rolled over us. The manager was apologetic and placed a partial cash refund on the table very unceremoniously however over 2 hours into our dining experience this was too little too late. We left underwhelmed, disappointed and sadly on the hunt for another local brekkie spot. With so many exceptional cafes and coffee spots in the surrounding area Top Dog Gourmet had best lift their game if they want to stay...

13 June 2024 Update:

So it turns out my below experience was the only time I had a bad experience at Topdog (and it was just one day).

We have since visited on many occasions for breakfast and dinner and it’s safe to say it is very consistent and everything is delicious!

If you’re lucky enough to have the warm fresh pastries, they are so delicious and you should definitely plan to NOT share it with anyone 🤣 (see newly added photos).

We’ve also enjoyed a pizza dinner with drinks, oh and their new chips are deliciously light and crispy! Highly recommend!

We usually order a take away breakfast burger which is delicious but today we decided to treat ourselves and dine in. We opted for the wrap version of the breakfast burger and boy was it disappointing. The bacon was so rubbery that you couldn’t take a bite out of the wrap without the whole piece of rubbery bacon coming out. There was also no sauce at all and it comes with scrambled eggs instead of fried which is probably also what contributed to how dry and gross it tasted.

To say I was disappointed would be an understatement. I don’t understand how they can produce such a great breakfast burger takeaway but then the eat in wrap was atrocious…. I just don’t...
