Overview Sushi Edo, located in the Newmarket Village shopping plaza, is a popular Japanese eatery featuring a sushi train and hot meal options ordered via tablet at each table.
Food The high-quality cuisine justifies Sushi Edo's popularity. My wife and I sampled a variety of dishes, including chicken sushi from the train, potato croquettes, miso soup, wagyu beef with teriyaki sauce, grilled salmon salad, and rice. While all items were enjoyable, the wagyu beef stood out as exceptional. Served on a sizzling hot plate, the tender, flavorful beef was generously coated in sweet teriyaki sauce and accompanied by an assortment of vegetables. The salmon salad was also impressive, with chunky pieces of fish served with a fresh salad, including radishes, cucumber and lettuce. To end, the creamy potato croquettes provided a satisfying finish. Although the food quality was superb, portion sizes were a tad modest.
Service Ordering is done through a tablet fixed to each table. While this method may seem outdated compared to modern app-based systems, as it only allows ordering one item at a time, the staff's efficiency more than compensates. Dishes arrive within minutes of ordering, and the numerous waitresses on duty were friendly and polite and are always ready to assist with the process if needed.
Atmosphere Sushi Edo doesn't accept reservations and can get extremely busy. We arrived on a Sunday evening to find a queue, but after a 20-minute wait, we were seated inside. The restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating, with heaters available outside for cooler evenings. The interior features comfortable upholstered bench seating and spacious tables. Despite being full, the acoustics allowed for easy conversation. The vibrant decor and lighting contribute to a lively, energetic ambience.
Cost The price point is relatively high, reflecting the current inflationary trends in Australia. Our meal, consisting of miso soup, a beer, two main dishes, and three sushi train plates, totaled $72. This represents a huge increase from prices even less than two years ago, making dining out increasingly expensive. For example, dishes off the train that cost about 3 in 2022, now cost 5. It’s unbelievable, the extent to which Australia is following Argentina down the road to economic ruin through hyperinflation.
Facilities and Parking The restaurant is located in the busy Newmarket Village shopping plaza. There are ample clean and well provisioned toilets just outside the restaurant, and parking is a breeze in the centre’s free car park.
Summary Sushi Edo offers an enjoyable dining experience with outstanding food, a vibrant atmosphere, and efficient service. While prices are steep, reflecting current economic conditions, the quality of the experience largely justifies the cost.

Read moreI’ve eaten here at least once a month for several years now, from back before they moved to their bigger location.
The new restaurant is great, the waiting times are much shorter as there’s way more seating, although you can typically still expect to wait for 10 or so minutes if you come at a busy time.
The iPads are super helpful, especially as I don’t eat meat and it’s hard to tell what’s inside from looking at some of the plates. There’s a brief description and an image of each dish, and you can order straight from the iPad if you don’t see something you like on the train itself.
I particularly like their prawn and avocado roll, which is always delicious, though I’ve enjoyed pretty much every dish I’ve tried. My partner, who does eat meat, loves most of their other offerings, with the exception of the Cheeto roll - though I’m not really sure what he was expecting with that one, and I don’t fault sushi edo.
Service is fast when you order drinks, refills, or other special menu items, and as part of their membership program you can earn points for each meal and redeem them later for discounts. This is sometimes tricky on the iPad, which doesn’t always recognize the correct discount for the number of points, but the staff are great and have been able to help when that has failed.
Overall, there’s many reasons I keep coming back to sushi edo, and the only downside is that it’s ruined me for other locations - very few sushi places nearby can rival the quality of...
Read moreI was extremely disappointed with the level of service from my visit to Sushi Edo Newmarket for takeaway. If you want to be one of the few businesses that charge a 15% public holiday surcharge then I am entitled to the same if not better standard of service. I was unfortunately left with a 23 minute from time of payment to collection for a takeaway order. I am also very annoyed that when I approached the staff to inquire if the order would be much longer they replied it was almost ready. The staff then walked over to shelf that had dishes that had been sitting on it for a short period of time and placed them into a bag and handed them to me. This not ok if my daughter went to another well known takeaway and ordered, waited for it to be made and completed eating it all in the time I waited for this order and she didn't have to pay a public holiday surcharge either. We as the consumer deserve a better standard of service to accompany the increased prices and if not it is too easy to write an honest account of our...
