Since moving to the West End suburbs, it’s only natural to want to explore and learn more about the local community. Hunting down authentic eats is, of course, one of the best ways to settle in and feel part of the neighbourhood.
One day, I happened to be passing by the corner of Gray Road and Hoogley Street when I spotted a shop called Thalassina Fish & Chips. A quick search told me that "Thalassina" comes from ancient Greek, meaning "of the sea" or "marine."
The shop itself is pretty low-key—no fancy fit-out—but come evening, it’s always packed with people, not an empty seat in sight! So today, I thought I’d pop in during the quieter hours, around 4 pm, to try their food. The staff were all smiles and super friendly. With so many options on the menu—and plenty of fish and seafood names I didn’t recognise—I asked for their recommendation and ended up ordering a mixed seafood platter for two.
The moment I opened the box, I was hit with the amazing aroma of freshly fried seafood. And the portion? Massive! One bite in, and I could tell how fresh the fish was—tender, flavourful, and juicy. No wonder they’ve got such high ratings on Google and are known as the best fish and chips in the West End! Honestly, it gives some of Brisbane’s well-known seafood restaurants a real run for their money.
I’ll definitely be rounding up a few mates to head back soon. Just a heads-up—don’t rock up on a Monday or Tuesday, they’re closed. Wouldn’t want you to find yourself staring at a...
Read moreAhoy there! Avast ye, mateys! I recently had the pleasure of visiting Thalassina Fish & Chips in West End, and let me tell you, it was like a taste of me childhood memories. This place knows how to do fish and chips like they did in the olden days - none of that fancy schmancy stuff, just good ol' fashioned chippy goodness.
The first thing that struck me was the way they wrap up the food in paper. It's like a warm, comforting hug from your nana. And speaking of comforting, the portions are hearty enough to fill even the most ravenous of bellies. And if you're like me and can't have fish and chips without a sprinkle of chicken salt, fear not - Thalassina has got you covered.
The seafood is fresh and delicious, and the chips are a work of art. They're crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside, and just the right amount of salty. The only downside is that the quantity of chips you get is based on dollar value, so it can be hard to know how much to order. But hey, who doesn't love a good chip surprise?
While Thalassina may not be the place to go for a fancy sit-down meal, it's perfect for a quality take away. And the staff are as friendly as can be - they'll make you feel right at home.
So if you're in the mood for some fish and chips that'll make you feel like you're sailing the seven seas, head on down to Thalassina. Just be prepared to walk the plank of deliciousness - it's a one-way trip to...
Read moreWas really shocked to hear this was voted one of the best fish & chips in Brisbane!
Fish was way over cooked, dry, hard and tasteless. Scallop must have been crumbed and cooked while still frozen, because the “fishy smelling defrost juice” just goes everywhere when you bite into it, and it’s only half cooked on the inside. Chips tasted ok, but a very small servings for the price they charge at this place.
We spent $70 for 2 adult and a 6 year old child’s lunch today, and would typically spend $40-$50 at our usual fish and chip shops elsewhere in Brisbane.
The thing that concerned me the most is their storage and handling of their “fresh” seafood in the window. You can see that lots of the pieces of fish looks like all dried out from sitting there in the cabinet and not wrapped with plastic etc. As I was waiting for my order, I watch them get a spray bottle of water and just keep spraying the dried out fish pieces to keep them looking a bit better. This is a serious breach of food safety breach as it encourages bacteria growth, and spreads it around all the trays inside the cabinet with the potential to cross contaminate. Please stop doing this because you will make people really...
