We attended Smug Fig for brunch on a late Saturday morning. The place looked great and was relatively busy. We had no booking but the staff accommodated us as there were still empty tables. We ordered coffee first which was a bit of a wait, but worth it! The coffee here is amazing! But it went downhill from there. We ordered at the counter then waited and waited. I noticed the person ordering immediately before me received their meals 15min before us. After waiting 40min we asked if our meals were close. The server collected our meals from the counter - my partner had noticed one meal had been sitting there for a lengthy period of time. When he gave me some bacon off his plate I picked it up and it was absolutely cold. Not an ounce of warmth in it - I asked about the rest of his meal and he said it was cold. So we called the server back over - she took it to replace it and I asked if it could be done quickly - 15min later he received his replacement meal. This was the big brekkie. I orderd the fried chicken benedict and couldn't cut through the chicken with my knife it was that overcooked. Very disappointing. There was no follow up either to make sure we were now happy with the meals. The staff were all busy but we noted as with most app ordering or counter ordering services, no one is engaged to see if customers have received their meals in a timely manner of if they are enjoying their meals. The staff all seemed lovely, friendly and helpful but feel it would serve Smug Fig well to have them engage with customers and be more aware. I was hoping this place would become a regular as our company is moving into the area shortly. For the coffee definitely. But not sure I would recommend it now. This is hopefully constructive criticism as this place has a lot...
Read moreThoroughly enjoyed our morning there for early brunch to start off the day.. It is easy self order using QR codes to open up the menu to order and pay.. The staff are really helpful.. and lovely to talk to. The ambience is modern cafe with with wife open glass window đȘ. With seating along the window both in and outside... There is a display case you can look at if you are just wanting a sweet delight with coffee âđ©. Most of the cabemit offerings are also on the online menu for ordering as well.. Don't worry if tachno babble is not your strong suit.. feel free to order and pay at the counter... The menu is reasonable and the food a good size.. We both had the stack with poached egg toast... Bacon maple Of course, avo and haloumi.. it was more than enough for me.. and also a wonderful iced long black coffee â.. also well made and delightful for a infrequent coffee drinker.. My brunch guest had one of their fresh juices which was also refreshing.. There is also a forest / gift shop attached on the corner... I was there last time and saw some hand woven floor mats.. shirt for $10.. longer for $20.. so I was able to make the purchase in this visit which was great.. and was able to secure new stock coming in this week also.. Everyone was so pleasant and we had a lovely outing.. Would recommend a visit to you soon. They are getting more popular and are positioned well...they are not in an arterial Rd which means it's quieter.. Thank you for a wonderful start to our op shopping day.. see you again soon.. Many...
Read moreI was excited to order the hash brown benny, and an extra shot latte in a mug. My friend ordered a big breakfast, gluten free. I really rated the coffee highly, but sadly the food let us down this time.
The benny looked amazing, but really, that's where the compliments end. The hash browns are more of a deep fried mash, rather than the textural wonder that is grated potato. The hollandaise has been unnecessarily over-complicated with "seasonal herbs" which dominated the flavours on the plate. I am a little biased here because I can't really handle dill, and in this case that is basically the only flavour in any mouthful. The smoked salmon choice was also extra briney, which is not to my taste either. A good hollandaise doesn't need "upgrading", in my opinion and if the hollandaise was left unblemished, this would have matched better. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly though, so there's a definite win there.
My friend's "big breakfast" was anything but "big", and at $25 for two rashers of bacon and one sausage, two over done poached eggs and a couple of slices of gluten free bread with some spinach, really doesn't reflect "big". An enormous hash brown may have saved them, but again this was really more of a deep fried mash than a good hash brown. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to snag a photo, but the benny really won on impressive plating vs the big brekky.
I would have given an extra star for the great coffee if I could, but the dill aftertaste is still...
