Eaten a lot of takeaway over the decades. Won't be eating here again. Called in to a restaurant that we have known for years as being good. Greeted pleasantly and cannot fault the front counter staff. Interesting to see the restaurant all but empty on a Friday night. Only wanted takeaway as it was now 8PM and had just finished work. Ordered $64 worth of food - 4 spring rolls, a steamed rice, a fried rice, chicken ginger and chicken & cashew. Also ordered 2 glasses of wine ($16) for us to enjoy while we waited. We were barely a third into the wine when the food came out, so we decided to eat the spring rolls in the waiting area. They had a strange texture, the centre having a mushy mouthfeel somewhat similar to a creamy paste, not normal for what I know a spring roll to be. They weren't unpleasant, the flavour was okay, just a strange texture which was off-putting. Got our food home and it was barely edible. I cannot taste the ginger in my meal. The vegies are okay. But the real issue is the chicken. Or, what was supposed to be chicken. It has a rubbery texture somewhat like over-cooked fish, but not tough at all - the best way I could describe it was that it seems like it was chicken loaf that has been boiled. Or perhaps poorly cooked calamari. It was not edible. Well, technically it was, but it was not at all enjoyable. My wife ordered the chicken cashews and it had the same issue. My wife phoned them. Not for a refund or a free meal, but just to let them know the feedback. They insisted it was fresh chicken (if it is I have no idea what they have done to it), and he ended up laughing to my wife when she suggested it wasn't chicken. The steamed rice was okay, as it should be. The fried rice is not nice. A hint of burnt onion (not caramalised), and that was the only flavour in it. It seems like too many poor quality ingredients are used. Overall the quality of the food was poor. I've never put a negative review up before and it saddens me to do so for an establishment that has been there for decades, but what I have said is accurate of our experience. I hope they learn from it so that your...
Read moreMy partner myself and my 4 year old went to this restaurant the other day and it was a very nice experience!
We got Szechuan beef that came out sizzling on the plate my partner LOVED IT!!
Honey chicken which tasted lovely but would be way better if the honey was mixed in with the chicken instead of being drizzled on the top. The added cashews we a great addition, never seen that before.
Combination fried rice was great! Just needed a bit more soy sauce for more flavour but the quantity of prawns was amazing and the bamboo shoots and scallops were great!
Satay chicken was perfect with a little kick of spice at the end!
I had the confit duck with oyster sauce. The duck was cooked to perfection! Melted in the mouth so amazing but I think if it was in a plum sauce that would make it 100x better! The addition of BBQ pork was so great considering those two items of Chinese cuisine are together in the one dish! Will 100% be getting again!
I also had the fried icecream.... omg... I will dream about that for the rest of my life! I gave my fairy floss and chocolate wafer twirl to my son which he had no complaints obviously. The icecream was the perfect texture and just enough sweetness to be a perfect combination with the biscuit crumb which was the perfect thickness around the icecream. I would go to this restaurant just for the fried icecream I'll be honest..
The atmosphere of the restaurant was the most authentic and traditional looking to Chinese architecture that I have ever seen with lovely red stained wood and gold trimmings. The lights with the hand painted art was so beautiful. Even the rib cage shaped chairs were a lovely addition.
The young servers were nice and left us to enjoy our meal in our own space and didn't mind my son being a mischief. We will be coming here on a regular basis now and we will be bringing my family here when they visit from...
Read moreWe stayed in Burnie for a few nights over the past weekend and decided we wanted some Chinese food, we picked Mandarin Palace and boy was it a wrong choice.
Started off well with friendly staff and prompt service but once we received the food it started to go down hill. First warning sign was how quickly after ordering our entree we received it. We ordered dumplings and spring rolls
The dumplings (4 dumplings) where like cardboard and very bland, reminded me of the dumplings you buy from the supermarket out of a box, the spring rolls (2 spring rolls) were not as bad but had that cardboard taste. Completely not worth the price they are charging.
we ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken and West Lake Duck, again come out pretty quickly, another warning sign, the duck was VERY poorly covered in batter and quite thick, however when you removed the batter is was quite nice. the Sweet & Sour Chicken however you couldn't as easily remove the batter and we only ate a little bit of it before it was to much.
we also ordered some rice with our meals and when it come it was hard on top
Do not recommend try Dave's noddles...
