The Burnie Regional Museum’s collections represent the history of Burnie and the surrounding North West region. From the time the first Europeans ventured out from Port Sorell in the mid-1820s to explore the wilderness of the North West, up to the present day.

The Burnie Regional Museum’s main attraction is the Federation Street, where visitors can glimpse what life was like in 1900 when Burnie was a bustling town of 1500 people at the height of its first economic boom.

The Burnie Regional Museum was founded by Peter Mercer (OAM, AMAA) with objects from his private museum collection that he had been gathering since 1942. It opened its doors to the public in 1971, as the Pioneer Village Museum.

In 2011 it was rebranded as the Burnie Regional Museum to better reflect the breadth of its collections. It is now the major cultural heritage institution in North West Tasmania and holds the third largest collection...

It's a shame that this doesn't open at least one day on the weekend, as not everyone has time off during the week. We were looking forward to a visit.

Response to reply: I stand by my one star. I appreciate that you are run by volunteers, as most museums around the country are, however most places only close one or two days a week, usually on a Monday, if at all. As you only open three days a week, surely one of them could be on the weekend. However, if you can't find volunteers who are flexible (and, yes, I'm a volunteer who used to work full time and still volunteer on weekends), I guess that you will continue to miss out on visitors as your lack of reviews seems...

Is was a good little set up of a street. Wonderful displays of the past. Aimed for adults or late teens. But sadly the was nothing interactive for the children to engage in apart from a hopscotch and to stand near a horse and buggy. How about some dress ups, things to touch and feel and get involved in. Sadly when asked what the best part was all 5 children said the art gallery (which isn't part of the museum) as the could get up close to the pictures. It would be great if you realised that to learn and take in their surroundings children need to be involved. So glad we are locals and didn't pay to go in or we'd have been...

A fantastic FREE ENTRY museum. The gentleman at the front said that if you donate, you get to take some cards and a little book that has all the history of Burnie in it. I donated and have since read the book which is like a visual guide through the museum itself. The museum is well kept, interesting, full of things to view. I took my time and looked through everything there was to see and read. It was very fun learning all about the history of Burnie. Highly recommend you stop here and spend some time. Most people will probably get through everything in 30-45 mins unless you're rushing or deliberately slow (like me!)

A fantastic regional museum, run by some very helpful and knowledgeable volunteers. The displays are very, very high quality, with a massive amount of information about the local area and its history. The old steet setup inside is great to walk through and gives a fantastic atmosphere. I couldn't believe that it was free to enter.....I have seen lesser quality museums charge for entry. If you want to spend an enjoyable hour or two, looking at some very interesting artifacts and learning all about the local history of Burnie, then this is the place for you.
