Read moreIf you are visiting Cairns do not fail to have breakfast or lunch or both at Wharf One Café Cairns. On Friday and Saturday nights you can have dinner as well at Wharf One. Perhaps have a walk or a sleep between visits! A fabulous location situated right on the wharf next to where the large passenger liners berth disgorging many hundreds of guests. Doubtless a fact not overlooked by Will and his partner Kaz the friendly and hardworking proprietors.
There is a large car park adjacent and it is only a few minutes walk from the centre of town and most large hotels. The café is an open design with tables located under a roof with fans or out on the wharf with both the views and the breeze.
There is nothing I could find on the menu that I did not want to eat. Unfortunately, time and the size of my stomach conspired against me although I gave it a good shot. Clever food combinations produced great flavours with an unambiguous policy of sourcing and using the best of local produce wherever possible. How they manage to create it from the relatively small kitchen is a miracle by itself.
The non-alcoholic drinks are so good I would almost give up alcohol although happily not entirely and there is a limited but thoughtful wine list. I assume it's not for breakfast as well but who knows… it is Far North Queensland! Eh!
The staff is friendly relaxed and helpful with no hint of the “attitude” often found in Sydney and Melbourne. The patrons, probably called customers in Cairns, are a mix of visitors, ship passengers and locals many of whom are “regulars” This is a good sign. A number of the people I spoke with enjoying their lunch had been there regularly for breakfast as well although I forgot to ask if they were staying for dinner.
Don’t miss Wharf One in Cairns, Far North Queensland. By the way, the dress code up there is pretty casual as with most of the area so you don’t need to dress up. Someone mentioned black thongs were considered formal! Just joking, I think.
Ask for Will or Kaz, they are both fonts of local knowledge and quite entertaining. Tell them Peter from...

I attended a private function here on Friday evening, and my experience was concerning. A bar chair collapsed beneath me, causing me to fall and injure my knees. Instead of offering an apology, the owner, Peter, simply took the chair away without any concern for my well-being. When my friend asked to speak with the owner, Peter stated he was the owner, and that was the end of it—no apology, no care.
I chose not to argue at the time because I didn't want to ruin my friends' evening, but I feel this needs to be shared. I anticipate that my review may lead to defensive responses, as I’ve seen in past reviews, but I believe the welfare of others is far more important than the risk of being publicly shamed. One moment I was enjoying time with friends, and the next I was on the floor with grazed knees and no appetite. My knees are now quite sore and swollen, and I feel lucky I wasn’t elderly, as the consequences could have been much worse.
Additionally, after ordering three cocktails, I stepped outside for ten minutes. Upon my return, I found only one cocktail prepared. I was told they assumed I had left, despite having paid. I was then informed that only one person could make cocktails, so I would have to wait until he finished serving food.
This experience has left me disappointed and concerned about safety and service. I hope this feedback prompts some reflection and...
