What an experience! Incredibly unassuming from the outside, you would certainly walk past without a second thought unless someone told you it was a restaurant. Once inside, the décor and ambience is reminiscent of a diner somewhere in rural Japan.
The owner, an old lady who speaks a mixture of Japanese and chunks of semi-comprehensible English phrases, does it all—chef, waitperson, and register. We entered the restaurant on a whim with no idea what to expect. After scouring the battered and well-read menu, we placed our order at the counter. We were slightly disappointed when told that some menu items were sold out. Nonetheless, we made a second choice.
An hour had passed with little sign of the old woman, as she had busied herself in the kitchen, preparing our carefully crafted meals. Then, she reappeared, although a little sheepish, presenting the EFPTOS machine to our table. With some effort and code switching, we made out that she was asking us if we could assist her in fixing up a jammed paper roll. After solving the problem, she bowed her head several times to express her gratitude and scurried back to the kitchen.
After patiently waiting for what seemed like close to two hours, our dishes came out. My god, the sheer aroma and appearance alone made it almost worth the wait. My friend had ordered a teriyaki chicken bowl—the meat was glistening and juicy, the rice was prepared as though every grain was individually coated with care in that umami-rich sauce. Another friend had ordered an unagi dish. Again, fully coated in that delicious, sweet soy glaze. For myself I ordered an oyako-don. It was complete with fluffy eggs and moist chicken, a wonderful pairing, seasoned to perfection. It was truly an experience to be had. It was evident that love and care had been poured into every one of her dishes.
To top off the night, the kind old owner bid us farewell with a small token of appreciation: a can of soft drink. We accepted the gift, and for some reason or another, it tasted extra sweet.
Hands down the best experience I've had at a restaurant anywhere in Perth. Highly...
Read moreHeard this place a long time ago so i decided to try eventually, came into the shop, didn't really what to expect when I walked out.
So I had a good look on the menu, it was simple but it has everything that you wish to have from a Japanese fast food. So I ordered a Unagi Don(Eel rice), paid $23.00 for the food, then the old japanese lady started to prepare my food, I thought it wouldn't be any different from anyother JP food, but I was wrong. She got a WHOLE fish fillet out and it was massive!
The rice is authentic japanese rice from the first bite that I can tell, the fish even though it has been microwaved but it tastes fresh, the sauce was amazing and the last bite could be finished with a piece of fish together.
Honestly, I've been to Japan for a quite few times and this little canteen reminds me some good memory when I was in JP, especially the hidden gems in small ally of Himeji, Nara or Kyoto.
People, if you see my comment please please please give it a try, the lady is a typical Japanese lady, truly genuine attitude with all the passion of her...
Read moreProbably the best food I've had in Australia, and one of the most authentic experiences of a cuisine ever. Being there just reminded us of a genuine home-cooked or even small eatery meals we had when we were travelling in Asia. The one Japanese lady that does literally everything is so lovely. The meat in the sapporo ramen was out of this world. We thought it had to be prime wagyu or something, but she said it was pork! Hands down one of the best meats I've ever tasted, and I don't even normally like pork. This just melts in your mouth, and is slightly sweet.. just delicious! Just don't expect to go in a group and receive all food at the same time. If you do Asian style dining (share everything that arrives in your own little portions) it works perfectly. She brings out dishes one by one and you get to share and taste each and have some time to digest. Overall a 200% experience. I'd give it 50 stars if I could. We went about 2 weeks ago. Ate till we were gonna explode and only paid 42 dollars as...
