Ohhhh nooo Oscar baby, what is you doing?!
I was keen to try this place cause I've heard nothing but good things online and I trust that reputation is fully deserved.
The bacon and egg roll with aioli cost $7. Granted it's probably a 'sensible' amount of bacon and egg in there - in that anything more would be considered decidedly unhealthy. Mind you, when I eat something like a bacon and egg roll I want it to put me one step closer to the grave. I'm not eating this stuff every day, I don't really want a sensible amount of bacon in there - pack it up please. Now at the end of the day I don't need to be a glutton to enjoy a meal, less is more when it's done right. So how did it taste? Well I don't think I really got the regular amount of aioli otherwise they are VERY sparing with it. I could not taste it at all except faintly in one or two bites. That's crazy! Overall though it was decent and I was like ok, my morning isn't ruined. That said, anyone saying this is the best bacon and egg roll in Belconnen/Canberra either got a better one than me or really needs to shop around cause it was nothing special. I understand the turkish bread rolls are handmade nightly, and that's cool, but if replacing it with a generic store bought bun would bring the cost down by a dollar or more I wouldn't miss it. Maybe the finer breads in life are wasted on me? I'm not sure.
Here is where things really went downhill. I ordered a banana milkshake to go. Cost $5 and the size of it was what I would consider GENEROUS. They also use the cardboard/paper straws, so good on them for that. But oh man...it wasn't mixed!! The first half of it tasted more like a vaguely sweet milk than anything else. Halfway down the flavor starts coming through but I'm still thinking something is not quite right here, couldn't put my finger on it other than it just didn't taste good. Then in what I could stomach of the last third of the drink was just a really strong artificial and cheap tasting banana syrup, or whatever they're using for flavoring. If I hadn't already been some distance from the cafe and if the weather had been a bit warmer I probably would have gone back to ask them if they missed a step or otherwise could give me a refund cause that is NOT how you shake milk and flavour.
Pretty damn sure I caught them on an off day and they are probably a lot better usually - hence the other reviews and relative fame of Oscar himself as being the man in...
Read moreI live in Sydney and was looking to deliver a beautiful, home made meal to family under duress in Canberra. I found Oscar's Bakery Cafe on line and couldn't have had a more positive experience. Oscar must be the kindest person on the planet! He went above and beyond in every possible way to accomodate me from afar and was able to cater to gluten free and vegetarian with ease. Oscar's delivered a beautiful selection of main courses and desserts and the feedback was "Oscar's dinner hit the spot, just like home made!" Thank you Oscar, Nick & Lauren for delivering a delicious "home-made" dinner when distance prevented me from doing so. I look forward to visiting Oscar's myself when next...
Read moreHad shakshuka and bbq platter for lunch and coffees. Everything was Ammmazing to my surprise! Shakshuka was super tasty and the bun served with it was nicely toasted. In the bbq platter both kebab items tasted good, no smell of the beef, were juicy and tender. The salad also had some dressing which was good. The serving was generous too and the prices are lower than almost every other cafe in Canberra (for similar items). Also the menu is Halal suitableđ„ł (checked cross-contamination too) Service was also very helpful and arranged baby chair for my cranky bub. I went with zero expectations and went out feeling satisfied! I think the only down side would be the parking issue...
