Bashan Restaurant is a hidden gem for aficionados of authentic Szechuan cuisine. From the moment I stepped in, the ambiance exuded warmth and comfort. The menu, a tapestry of traditional flavors, promised an adventure for the taste buds.

The culinary experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Each dish was a testament to the chef's mastery of Szechuan cuisine. The flavors were bold, unapologetic, and had a delightful kick of chili that awakened the senses. The traditional touch was evident in every bite, showcasing the restaurant's commitment to preserving the essence of this remarkable cuisine.

The tender morsels bathed in a rich, aromatic sauce left an indelible mark on my palate. It was a harmonious dance of spicy, sweet, and savory that I won't soon forget.

The attentive and knowledgeable staff enhanced the experience. Their recommendations were spot-on, and they were always ready with a smile to cater to our needs.

I used to order from this place, and last year I tried their pea and beef dish. Unfortunately, it was a huge disappointment — the beef was actually spoiled and had a sour, off taste, and the rice was poorly cooked, still half-raw like it had only been half-steamed. That experience already made me hesitate to come back.

But this year, I thought I’d give them another chance, hoping things had improved. Sadly, it didn’t get any better. I ordered the rice noodles this time, and they were breaking apart as soon as I picked them up — clearly undercooked. On top of that, the bowl was mostly just tofu skin, barely any proper ingredients. It really wasn’t worth it.

I heard they changed chefs last year, maybe even changed owners, but honestly, the quality just hasn’t improved. I really suggest trying somewhere...

I would stay away from this place. I ordered what should have been a pretty simple dish, eggplant, but it was soaked in heavy grease made from god-knows-what, and I now have a belly ache that won't go away. The hygiene practices were even worse. The one wait person, probably a student, cleared a table while grabbing dirty napkins and such, and the next second used the same hands, without washing or wiping them, to bring out the dishes. I really hesitated to eat my food but paid attention to what part of my bowl he touched so that I could avoid touching that myself. He also did not wipe down the tables that he cleared, including ours, he just left the small scraps on the table for the next customer. So I don't know if I'm hurting because of the awful food or the even worse...

Hidden around the back of the block, it’s a small place where you QR code the menu and pay on ordering - through the phone. The good - food was nice enough, reasonably priced. The bad - wait staff didn’t acknowledge I’d even walked in, sat down, or say a single word to me the entire time I was there. The worst - this place is filthy. Every (& I mean every) table had discarded food plates and piles of food strewn across the surface. Nothing was collected or tied away, until someone else tried to sit down. The waste from someone else’s meal was then picked up and the table wiped with a cloth but not sprayed. You can see the mess in my photos. Obviously the students frequenting the place don’t mind, but for anyone who values restaurant hygiene, I’d avoid.

Did some research on where we could find some nice laksa in civic, and Bashan came up. We ordered a chicken kung pao rice set, chicken laksa, and a can of solo. The serving size was very large for the laksa, and it was delicious. There were a few customers in the restaurant, and we did not wait for too long. The only suggestion would be to have the window blinds on runners, as every time someone opened the door (on a windy day), it was like a cyclone inside. The food and service was amazing and we will be back again šŸ˜€ Thank you team
