The food was decent, and the environment was fantastic. However, the service left much to be desired. Specifically, I want to address the experience on December 23rd. Among the two girls working in the front office, the taller one was pleasant and welcoming, always with a smile. The guy at the front desk was also polite and kind. However, the shorter girl with big eyes was the source of frustration.
We ordered about $100 worth of food for three people. When the food was served, she simply placed it on the table and walked away without saying a word (no explanation of the dishes, no acknowledgment). Curious about her demeanor, I observed her for a while. She seemed to carry a perpetually sad expression and was unresponsive to basic interactions. When I asked her questions, her face looked as though she would rather be anywhere else. My thought was, if you’re unhappy, perhaps it’s better to take a day off or consider a change in environment instead of bringing negativity to customers.
Just when I assumed she would never smile, I noticed her chatting and laughing while clearing kitchen waste with another staff member—her demeanor was completely different.
I understand the lunch rush hour was busy, with 22 tables in the front room and only three attendants. Well, if she doesn't have to stay here because of some necessary reasons or relationship. Please give her some training. By the way, she's quite adept at handling guests, not the guests’...

Certainly the menu had favourites such as fish cakes on the starter list, Pad Thai and Pad See Ew along with massaman duck curry for mains, though delve deeper and you have some certain delights such as soft shell crab with a tangy salad - that is infused with sweet and sour flavours and a heat of several chilli's.
There is dessert available including sticky rice with fresh mango and coconut cream.
There is a regular menu, a specials menu and a lunch menu. The restaurant is licensed so there is also an extensive drinks menu available.
Staff are welcoming and will confirm with you whether you like things in the original and traditional Thai flavours including the heat of the chills or whether you'd like them toned down. Be brave and take on the trading flavours and heat. It's fun and delicious.
There is seating inside and out, with outdoor seating under cover and heated.
Bookings are welcome for groups especially during lunch.

Read moreStep away from Commercial thai food in canberra into what feels like something authentic. Thanks to the emergence of a chain locally, it had become my acceptable benchmark, but we recently stumbled upon Coco nine during a walk and had their (saturday) lunchtime special. I found their service top notch (friendly and attentive) and their flavours well balanced. Unlike the very unfriendly service with some nearby thai places.
Subsequently we ordered takeaway and found the same level of service and taste. I have made a firm decision to avoid the pretentious chains that increasingly feed me bland food and even blander service and will keep Coco Nine on my top 10 list. I would recommend their jungle chicken curry (warms you up on a cold winters night- careful it may be a bit too spicy for some), and give their lunchtime specials a spin, $12-15 doesn't seem much for a really yummy plateful (I had the seafood...
