Ok, so Flute is a "not so secret" place for great pastries. It is definitely worth going to if you want to indulge in delicious unhealthiness that is made to a very high standard.
I've tried many of their offerings, including bread, pies, cakes, and macarons. In short, their food is very good, but if you're looking for the cafe experience, the coffee is considered very good, but the food offerings are quite limited.
As a non-coffee drinker, I feel that I am utterly unqualified to refute the high regard their coffee has earned. However, I believe their hot chocolates could be significantly improved. Their chai lattes are good, but not exceptional. Maybe this is the state of a truly french patisserie? If so, please forgive me.
If you want something delicious to take home. Be prepared to go early. The place is only open on weekdays, from 8am -3pm. So don't expect a well-earned weekend brunch. Also, if you do go on a weekday don't expect to pick anything up after work. Warning: There isn't always much left by 12pm, so visiting early is best... or I'm sure you can pre-order something special if you want to avoid disappointment.
While the prices for cakes can reach $40-50, and individual serving size offerings range from $6-10.. I'm not sure what value point will be suitable to you. However, if you have the spare funds, I highly recommend their profiterole cakes, their fruit flans, and anything that involves jam and cream. Their bread is very good, but I recommend rapid consumption, as it's always best as fresh as possible, and you will pay extra for that quality.
Overall, I think Flute does make some amazing food. However, the opening hours, somewhat out-of-the-way location, and price limit the number of times I can visit. When it is open, I've seen it both utterly packed, and practically deserted, so it's probably best for smaller gatherings unless you make a reservation. (I don't know if that's possible, but many places do offer it when asked).
I hope this...
Read moreToday I had the temerity to ask a staff member (a beardless youth) why they turned off their espresso machine more than 10 minutes prior to the advertised closing time.(3 pm) and whether some Ayatollah had placed a fatwah on the serving of decent coffee in that part of Canberra after 3. He said he didn't understand the question, so I repeated it.
At this point a woman who identified herself as the owner accused me of being rude to her staff, pointed to the door, and told me I was banned.
So I won't be back to partake of their high-fat and high sugar content pastries: my GP will be pleased.
And there are plenty of other cafés and possibly even a few bakeries* around Canberra and Queanbeyan where one can get a decent coffee without enduring a "the customer is always wrong" attitude.
but none to match Braidwood's Dojo or the Sir...
