If youâre looking for a new go-to pub in Woden, The Southern is the place to be! This spot has nailed the perfect mix of a laid-back vibe, killer food, and a buzzing atmosphere that keeps you coming back for more.
First off, the space itself is awesomeâthink warm, inviting, and stylish without trying too hard. The massive oak bar is a standout, and with heaps of big screens, itâs perfect for catching the game with mates. Whether youâre there for a chill night out, a round of trivia, or just a solid meal, theyâve got you covered.
Now, letâs talk food. The menu hits that sweet spot between classic pub grub and fresh, modern eats. The buffalo wings are an absolute winner (half a kilo for under $20!), and the pulled pork tacos? Unreal. If youâre feeling something lighter, the salmon poke bowl is a great shout. And the drinks? A solid mix of local craft beers (shoutout to Capital Brewing and BentSpoke) alongside your go-to classics.
Open every day from noon till late, The Southern makes it super easy to pop in for a long lunch, post-work drinks, or a full-blown feast. Youâll find it right on Irving Street, Phillipâeasy to get to and even easier to stay for one more round.
Bottom line: whether youâre after great food, a lively atmosphere, or just a top-notch pub experience, The Southern delivers big time. Get down there and check it outâyou...

Friendly and knowledgeable bar staff. Chance for him to catch up on the test match scores. Relaxed and chill pub atmosphere which is something I haven't encountered in Woden since Soul Bar days.... but unlike Soul Bar, this establishment had no sticky floors and was clean and well furnished. Quirky chef who definitely knows how to murder a pizza. Wood fired goodness with one of the best bases I've had outside of my Zio's house in northern Italy. Drinks first. He had a balter on tap, I had a capital brewing ginger beer (with ice and lime - great suggestion from helpful Ms behind the bar). Bottle of water from the icy bar fridge took the temp down 10 degrees while helping our paid beverages endure. We awaited our pizza selection -- the Bellucci special (like a chicken Caesar salad but made into a pizza). Happy to see this favourite from the previous establishment has been retained on the new pub's menu. It was BETTER than the OG! All up, extremely satisfied with the visit and I'll...
Read moreJust visited The Southern Public and Iâm absolutely blown away! I had the most amazing Chicken Kiev served on a bed of potato mash with steamed veggies â and let me tell you, the taste was sublime. So balanced, so comforting, and so beautifully executed. It truly hit the right chord â I fell in love with the food and the place instantly.
I arrived a little early at 11:15 AM, and although their kitchen officially opens at 11:30 AM, the staff were incredibly welcoming and graciously took my order. What impressed me even more was that the chef didnât wait for the clock to strike 11:30 â he got straight to work. By 11:37 AM, my meal was already at the table. That kind of efficiency, without compromising on quality, deserves a standing ovation.
The service, the food, the vibe â everything was spot on. Iâd give it more than 5 stars if I could.
100% recommend this gem in Phillip, ACT. Will...
