Your typical Aussie Asian fare which is a mish mash of chinese, Thai, Malaysian, indonesian etc. All the usual staples like fried rice and spring rolls. Great for a group as there is something for everyone.
The prices are very reasonable with large portions. I only tried hainan chicken rice, duck pancakes and chicken skewers but all 3 were sort of disappointing.
Hainan chicken rice was strange. The rice was long grain rice, with some yellow colouring or chicken stock through it and a slice of ginger. The ginger fragrance didn't really come through much though. The rice was dry. I wish it was just normal chinese boiled rice. Real hainanese chicken rice should be flavoured with rendered chicken fat, a bit of peanut oil, shallots, ginger, garlic, pandan leaves and cooked in the chicken broth. This rice was woeful.
There was no skin on the chicken. A good Hainanese chicken should have skin intact, with a nice gelatinous layer under that. The chicken should be succulent and well seasoned. This chicken, however, was dry.
They served chicken broth on the side. This was almost well balanced, just a bit too sweet. It was not particularly fresh, fragrant or comforting. I poured this over the chicken rice since the dish was too dry.
Chicken was served on steamed Asian greens, maybe choy sum. It also came with a thin peanut sauce, the flavour was pretty good, it had quite a bit of chilli. I don't see the need for this sauce, it's not traditional.
I asked for chilli oil, their chilli oil is very yummy and quite spicy as well. Not your usual lao gan ma. So this dish was pitiful. Where are the fresh green herbs? The aromatics? The vibrant sauces? Maybe just add a bit of cucumber and coriander for presentation? No, there was none of this. 😒
When you have something as plain as boiled chicken and rice, you really have to build the flavours with proper cooking technique and not take shortcuts.
I won't bore you with my breakdown of the entrees. For me, it didn't hit the spot but the food is reasonable for the...
Read moreTheir laksa's are fantastic, the Haimani Chicken is also awesome, unfortunately the rest of the menu is underwhelming. Out of the 11 of us, only those of us who got the laksa were happy with our meals. If this restaurant just sold laksa I'd give it 5 stars easy, unfortunately the rest of the menu is a solid 2, I think it's the vegetables that let it down. Service is professional and friendly, although having said that, the timing was poor. Some of us had almost finished eating by the time other people on our table were just getting their food. But we had to start eating or our food would have gone cold. From my experience, eating in has not been the best, but getting take away has been spot on every time. Tough choice putting a rating, so many positives, but unfortunately a few...
Read moreI can’t really rate this place as they won’t take the order. So I called this restaurant to place an order for veg laksa… I specifically asked if it has chicken stock or fish sauce as I don’t eat chicken, fish or any meat items… dairy and eggs are fine… they said it has chicken stock and fish sauce. I then asked if I can order any veg curry… they said all their curries have fish sauce. I told them I will call back after discussing with my friend who too is veg. We decided we will order a curry and we don’t mind a bit of fish sauce. So I called back and the lady initially heard me when I said hello and then suddenly goes I can’t hear you and disconnected. I tried a couple of times again and she again disconnected. Overall, I got an impression she wasn’t keen to serve us so yeah....
