Perched atop the Mantra at Sharks hotel, the Aviary Rooftop Bar offers an exquisite dining experience with sweeping views of the Gold Coast skyline and Hinterland. The contemporary, coastal design with a playful edge creates a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere, perfect for any occasion. Despite the quiet night, the vibrant ambiance was maintained with the help of friendly staff and attentive service.
The housemade Italian meatballs in tomato sugo with Grana Padano were a standout, showcasing traditional Italian craftsmanship. The meatballs were incredibly succulent and soft, encased in a rich tomato sugo and topped with Grana Padano. As an Italian, I found the flavours authentic and reminiscent of homemade Italian cooking, capturing the essence of a classic dish perfectly.
The salt and pepper calamari with lemon myrtle, tagarashi pepper, pickled ginger, and kewpie lime was beautifully balanced, with the calamari being fresh and tender. The seasoning of lemon myrtle and tagarashi pepper added a unique twist, while the pickled ginger and kewpie lime provided a refreshing contrast, making each bite a delightful experience.
The pizza selections were extraordinary. The Smoke on the Water featured house red sauce, smoked burrata, prosciutto, rocket, balsamic reduction, and merlot salt, creating a symphony of flavours. The smoked burrata added a rich, creamy texture that paired wonderfully with the savoury prosciutto and the slight bitterness of rocket, all tied together by the sweet and tangy balsamic reduction.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers pizza was a highlight with house red sauce, pepperoni, truffle salami, pork and fennel sausage, mozzarella, and Fresno chili. Each ingredient brought its own flair, from the spicy Fresno chili to the aromatic truffle salami and the hearty pork and fennel sausage, creating a harmonious blend of bold flavours.
The Bloody Valentine pizza combined house red sauce, prosciutto, Frenzo chili, radicchio, celeriac remoulade, and pecorino. The radicchio and celeriac remoulade added a refreshing crunch, complementing the rich and salty prosciutto and pecorino perfectly.
Although Stefano, the Italian pizza chef, did not serve us directly, his presence was felt through the exceptional quality of the pizzas. Stefanoâs artistry and skill in pizza making were evident, and the abstract yet authentic nature of these pizzas was unlike anything Iâve experienced before. Each pizza was a unique creation that still managed to capture the essence of traditional Italian flavours.
Throughout the evening, the manager frequently checked on us, ensuring we were comfortable and satisfied, enhancing the overall experience. The personal attention and genuine care from the staff made the night even more enjoyable.

Read moreMy family and I were publicly humiliated tonight by the manager and staff at this venue. After travelling 6 hours to see our children at boarding school we checked into the Mantra feeling exhausted. We are from rural Qld and it is rare these days that we have the privilege to share a meal with our children who are at TSS boarding school. Nothing was mentioned to us at checkin about the Rooftop bar being over 18âs when I asked about their meals. We were staying in a family room for 2 adults and 2 children. We took both of our 17 year old up with intention of having wood fire pizza on the rooftop. We entered the venue and the 17 yr olds went and got us a table to eat at and my husband and I ordered our drinks and grabbed the dinner menu. We ordered 2 glasses of wine for us parents and 2 waters for the 17 yr olds. This totalling $30.00 . We all sat at the table and discussed what pizzas we would order. I was exhausted so asked the 17 yr olds to order the meals and to charge the meals to our room account. The 17 yr olds came back and said that they were told that they had to leave because of their age. I then went and ordered our meals as I thought that there must be a misunderstanding due to the fact that: -We were not told that this was a over 18 venue when we checked in and inquired at reception. -My 17 year old and I were not told it was a over 18 venue when we went there earlier to reserve a table but were told not to reserve a table as it was going to be a quiet night. My husband and I were with our children We were obviously there for a quiet family dinner Our 17 year olds were drinking water I ordered our meals and paid for them. We were siting at the table enjoying each otherâs company in a quiet manner when a employee walked out to the rooftop section and pointed us out to her manager. I felt like everyone on the roof top was looking at us . The manager then told us that our children were not aloud to be there due to their age. My husband asked the manager where the signage was stating this as we really felt like we were being discriminated against. The manager was not aware of any signage being in the restaurant. We tried reasoning with the manager but were not aloud to stay on the premises with our 17 year olds. The four of us walked out of the restaurant with the manager walking behind us and every person in that restaurant staring at us. The way this was handled wrecked our night and our weekend. When we get the chance we travel 6 hrs to have a Saturday night with our children and we then drive another 6 hours on Sunday to get home. Good staff and good managers have common sense. None was used at all in this horrible situation that we were...
Read moreTL;DR - recommended for private hirer or a casual visit. Shannon, Cameron and Paige are awesome. We privately hired the venue for our not-so-traditional wedding reception and it was an absolute 10/10 experience.
Bar staff were not just serving drinks but were genuinely enjoying the event which was really refreshing to see! One staff member was trying to clean up a spill on the dance floor and rather than pushing everyone off the floor and just 'doing their job', he simply danced his way into the middle with the towel under his feet.
Guests complimented the food and cocktails, staff were proactively bringing my husband and I food and drinks while we were busy mingling... even the security team did a great job at keeping the event as safe as possible for us all.
MASSIVE shoutout to Cam, Shannon and Paige at Sharks and the Aviary venues. Shannon helped us (mainly my mum) plan the day, even creating a wet weather plan which needed to be used with little notice. Paige was there on the day to help with setup, directing guests, getting wet while holding umbrellas for us and making sure we were on time down the aisle! Finally, Cam managed the reception, food and drink service, kept our external contractors happy and kept checking in with us on the night to make sure everything was going plan. You three made the day amazing and very easy for us, we can't...
