I knew the Commune Cafe was a quality establishment, and approached optimistically in the morning - hoping to find a spot to work for the day. Caffeine is commonly attached to my daily productivity.
Once I saw the roadworks engulfing the whole area, I was less optimistic but approached the seeming cacophony of chaos cautiously. The construction crew were friendly and guided me to a prime parking spot right outside.
Stepping inside, I found a comfy nook table with a powerpoint, making it an ideal remote workspace for the day.
They have QR codes on the tables, so you can order and pay conveniently without human interaction if you wish. I started with a coffee which arrived promptly and during the day I sampled both coffee blends on offer.
After my first coffee, my colleague arrived for a meeting and we ordered some breakfast. I went with the mushrooms on toast with avocado and feta. I enjoyed it a lot and the meeting was a success, I ordered a tea and settled into my first morning calls and virtual meetings for the day.
Later in the day, I decided to try the fish tacos for lunch, my youthful adventures in Los Angeles has made them something I am usually drawn to, even though they can be hit and miss.
I liked the rustic nature of the dish and thought the fish was nice. I like a good crunchy and herby affair when it comes to making the salad, sauces and flavours of a fish taco, especially to make the dish more playful and complimentary to the flavours of the fish. Despite a big handful of herbs and some chilli (see picture), these were pretty straight up and down. The herbs didn’t have much flavour, the coleslaw wasn’t crunchy anymore and so with the texture of the fish and avocado, it made the whole thing a bit more mushy by the end than I like, but I still enjoyed it.
The noise from the roadworks and construction were a persistent hum, a reminder of the world beyond the sanctuary I am sure a place called “The Commune” aims for. The place was still well patroned, but not as busy as it deserves to be, and I am sure the roadworks are a major factor.
Despite the external tumult, my work day at Commune was a success. As a regular digital nomad, I’d recommend it, the coffee is good and the staff weren’t trying to hurry me to order during the day, although I did keep the coffee and tea orders pretty regular during the day, as I should. Don’t let the roadworks around put you off, head there the owners will thank you, and so will...
Read moreI used to live a few doors away and frequented this establishment a lot. They all knew my name and were so friendly and professional But since I moved away I am not able to visit like I use to. Today made the effort of going into commune despite the lack of parking which is always a challenge . To get my favourite home made almond milk ice latte. Prices have definitely gone up but that isn’t my beef. I did notice the staff just not as friendly in fact one of the staff was rude. I have a feeling she was the manager of she gave that feeling she was in charge. The others were ok but got the feeling maybe they were newish. Then it occurred to me that maybe it’s changed owners and I was right. It’s amazing how the energy of a place can change depending on who is running the show. It’s not the same. I think the previous owners were more hands on and you could tell they ran a tight ship and customer service was really focused on. I am in the customer service industry so there is no reason to be rude to customers. Without customers you have no job. Now it just feels like young people that don’t really want to work there that really don’t like their customers. Made me feel like I was a bother. I won’t be going in again. I can make my own almond milk. I give a 3 stars as I don’t know about the food. It’s more about the attitude I am complaining about. BTW I asked if they do the salad anymore. Told they weren’t popular. Surprising considering I used to have to come in early to buy one before they ran out. Though the last time I did buy one the prices went right up so maybe that’s why it wasn’t popular anymore. I asked if they had salad to order that was similar. And told me to look it up myself. I had but wasn’t clear if it was similar. So dismissive and rude. I apologised if I was being in the way by asking the question . But then I looked around hardly anyone around. Business was hardly pumping. I guess just didn’t want to be...
Read moreTwo days in a row I’ve had a bad experience. Firstly, since the new owner have taken offer they’ve moved the tables so close together you are almost sitting in the table next lap. Second, one of the staff I’ve had a terrible experience with now two days in a row. Yesterday we went in for a coffee and she was extremely rude, trying to convince us we had order something that we didn’t. When we told her sorry we didn’t order that, she mumbled, walked away with the coffee order, came back and told us that we did order that!! We sat confused thinking it’s the first time I’ve experienced gaslighting at a cafe lol. It turned out it was the ppl next tables coffees. We laughed about it as a group, thinking her behaviour was strange and moved on. This morning, I went there with my partner and dog. There’s was two tables available, one was next to 1/2 doorways, the other was crammed in the middle of two tables. Because the tables are so close together, we sat next to the door since our dog dosent fit otherwise A lovely girl came over to get us water. A few minutes later, the girl from yesterday came over told us that we couldn’t sit next to the door cause they used it getting in and out and our dog would be in the way. (I’ve sat here many times before and that has never been a problem, ppl can easily move past if they choose to use this doorway). There was no where else to sit where we would fit, so we said oh I guesss we have to go somewhere else) she gave us a condescending look at told us “as you wish”. We left feeling shamed. Very unfortunate because we live across the road and have been visiting this place weekly for 4 years, but these past few encounters always leaves us feeling bad and I won’t be...
